big news in digital reading. And App has been produced which will allow for the checkout of Adobe Digital Edition books to Apple iThings.

I know many people have been wanting to try this but do not own an appropriate digital eReader. It is now possible to use an App on your Apple Devices.

I use Overdrive all the time for audiobooks. They also have a good selection of e-books. It's well worth looking to your libraries for these free downloads.

To use BlueFire, you need an Adobe account. Is this anything I shoudl worry about signing up for? Is it vbetter to wiat for the Overdrive iPhone app that is supposed to be released early next month? -- Suzanne

Cool find! I just set it up on my ipod touch. I was already borrowing library ebooks to read on my laptop. Now I can take them with me. For anyone worried about using aobe digital editions, Ive been using it for months and no problems. Its the preferred program that public libraries use to manage the digital books they send you.

It is extremely likely the Overdrive App that is planned will also use Adobe Digital Editions to authorize the books.

No, I really wouldn't say anybody should be concerned about installing Adobe Digital Editions on their computer. Its been around for years. It was buggy for the longest time but over the past 6 to 12 months has improved considerably. I've never heard anybody claim it has done malicious harm to their machine. More just #@$#@$@#@ thing crashed again!

This also works with Netgalley--unfortunately, Bluefire reader doesn't work with first generation iPod Touches.

A huge thank you to the OP!!!!

I was seriously considering a nook color that is coming out next week, but the $250 price tag was a big downside.

I have used my ipod touch to read books from the kindle app, but I always wanted to read library books.

Hooray!! It works like a charm!! Thanks!! :thumbsup2

I have a 1st gen IPOD touch - can someone walk me through

checking out digital books? (what site? what app?)

checking out audio books? (same)

Are these free?

BillWendy,

You're in the same boat as me with the First Gen iPod Touch, which can't use the Bluefire reader (yet, at least--I'll let you know if I hear differently). There are other options, though:

For eBooks:
*You can download the Kindle app from the App Store, and either pay for books or only download free ones. They have quite a few free ones--mostly classics, but some newer ones that are free as a promotion--and I've found quite a few of those that I've enjoyed.
*You can download Stanza, which compiles several different free book search engines to help you find things to read. You can also use the Stanza desktop program to convert PDFs to ePub format and transfer them to your phone. There is a variety of freeware for both PC and Macs to help with this.
*You won't be able to transfer Adobe Digital Editions books to your iPod Touch, but you can still read them on your computer.

For Audiobooks:
*You can purchase them through iTunes
* Highly Recommended (by me, at least!): See if your local library has a digital collection available--these collections are largely through a service called OverDrive (I've not used any other service). You'd be able to check out an Audiobook on Overdrive and use Overdrive software on your computer and iPod Touch to transfer the Audiobooks to your device. If you need any help with that, feel free to PM me. My job involves assisting patrons with Overdrive software a lot. :-)

To those using Bluefire: Do you love it? I have to use Adobe Digital Editions for my job and I want Bluefire badly, but I'm not wanting to upgrade devices right now. Oh, well. I can't really be picky about it. :-)
