I would like to know some opinions about weighing in everyday. I have been doing my weight every morning but it is having a roller coaster effect on me. I have only started doing this because my DW weighs every morning to monitor her pregnancy and I picked up that habit.

Just looking for some thoughts and opinions on the pros and cons of doing this every morning, after going up a pound this morning I wanted to pull my hair out

Thanks "Wishers"

I weigh myself about 3-4 times a day. I never owned a scale before I started this way of eating. Now I am obsessed

I think it helps me but keep in mind that your weight can fluctuate 3lbs either way in a given day.

Personally, I always go by the lowest weight, LOL!:o

You're going to have mixed replys on this one. There are two schools of thought and you've just got to figure out which one works for you. Some of us weigh daily - I do because it gives me added incentive to keep going with the plan - it I'm up, I try a little harder when I'm down, I'm happy but I realize that there's alot of factors that could be at work as well. Still you should have one weigh in day that is your real weight for the week. If you can't stand the up and down thing of everyday weighing then you really should do it just once a week cause the daily thing can just make some people crazy or depressed cause it's not happening fast enough. Some people only weigh once every two weeks or every month! Doing it several times a day is not a good plan - unless you're one of those people who just wants to see if 16 oz of water really does equal one lb! I sometimes do that - weird, huh? But in my mind that's not what I weigh. I will confess here that I do weigh before I go to bed to give me an idea of what to expect on the next day's WI.

You should hear all the view on this one. You need to figure out what works for you!

I do my official WI on Friday's then I do a sneak WI on Monday's just to get myself in check for the week and to see if I had done any damage over the weekend. If you WI everyday, you can't let it bother you if you are up one day and down the next. Things that you eat one day will make a difference on your weight especially if you had a lot of sodium, etc. My feeling is if you can weigh each day and not let it get you bummed if you are up one day then go for it. If it is bothering you, set a normal WI day and then maybe another one half-way through the week. Also, sending PD to your expecting DW.:D

I weight myself several times a day. I know that the scale goes up and down within the day, and up and down within the week. My weigh in that counts is on Monday nights. That is my official weigh in. I really enjoy seeing what I weigh throughout the day. I will even weigh myself after getting dressed just to see how much it added. I guess I feel like I have learned a lot by seeing how my body re-acts to certain things. It also helped when I started eating dill pickles because they were 0 points. I would have one a day after work. Well after a few days of this, my weight went up. I was retaining water from the extra sodium in the pickles. I quickly realized that I shouldn't eat them every day, and now do only on occasion. My weight then went down really quickly. By seeing my weight each day I knew that something was affecting it. After you do it for a while, you start to understand and expect how your body works.

Just don't become obsessed and worry about every fluctuation. It can sometimes jump several pounds in one day.

I was weighing in two to three times a day....
until I realized that I had turned the scale into a type of god...
I was so interested in what the scale was going to tell me about "how good" or "how bad" I'd been that it would affect my mood for the day (or at least until the next weigh in) If I was down, it must have been because I did something right...and I was happy, if it was up, it must have been because I had done the wrong thing, and I was depressed.
So now I weigh in once a week--on Thursdays. At first it was hard, not to weigh every day and after every Curves workout, but now I can see the results of eating well and working out over the course of a week....and it's great not to have those constant mood swings!

Weigh yourself as many times a week as you want - but don't get mad when the scale fluctuates alittle each day or even several times a day - what ever your weigh in day and time is only use that as your true weight and to tell if you have lost or not.

We all are drinking alot of water and no matter which plan we are doing we are attempting to eat healthier and exercise more. Well as we exercise we are losing fat and gaining muscle tissue and its a fact that muscle weighs more than fat - so sometimes we gain a little because of this. Also the water - get a large cup/tumbler and fill it with water - don't drink it - now without holding it step on the scale and see the weight - now step on the scale holding the water and see the weight go up - same thing with a meal - plate it - weigh yourself and then weigh yourself immediately after eating your weight goes up - But its temporary - thats why the weighing yourself everday or more can upset some folks(myself included). But I like so many other Wisher's are in it for the long haul - our weight will go down over time and we will be healthier people for it.

So I have babbled enough - Don't get upset with what the scale reads - just stay on track and you will sucseed!

hi there.........this has been a topic I wrestled with before I started my atkins diet last monday. I agree with both weighing yourself everyday or just weighing yourself once a week. I personally weight myself everyday but I don't get obsessed. Since I am trying different foods and beverages I like to weigh myself every morning to see how the things I ate and drank the day before have effected me. For instance, I have either lost weight or stayed pretty much consistant for these past 12 days except this morning I was up 1/2 a pound. Now last night I tried one of those diet rite sodas and I gained 1/2 a pound. So now today I can try to avoid caffeine and see what happens tomorrow. I am also aware that a number of things can effect my weight but I like to monitor it and try to make changes that will help better my weight loss progress. I also watched a show not too long ago about successful people in weight loss and the two things I remember that they had in common were: they wrote down everything they ate, and weighed themselves often to monitor flucuations. but everyone's body is different and I am sure some people flucate more often then others so you have to probably write down all the pros and con's that apply to YOU for weighing yourself everyday and then do the same for weighing yourself weekly. or even bi-weekly. seeing your thoughts on paper might help you see what will work best. Writing things down always helps me. Hope that helps. best of luck to ya!!

I weigh myself first thing every morning, just to check how Im doing, however the weight I really go by is my Saturday morning weight since that is usually my best day of the week. I like knowing day by day to see if I need to be extra strict to get to where I want to be, or if I can do a little bit of cheating, etc...

I haven't owned a scale in over 8 years.

But now...it lurks. Sitting in the corner of my bathroom...decorated with colorful little fishes to match the ones hanging on the bathroom wall. It peers at me everytime I walk in there with it's big ZERO for an eyeball.......I can hear it talking to me.....like a whisper in a small scale-like voice....
'step on me......you know you want to....spin my dial......come on.....*insert eerie scale-like laugh here*'

I look at it...contemplating the dial....should I? no..not yet.
It's only been one day....
I stare for so long and so hard that the decorative fishies come alive and sing to me.....'spin the dial.....spin the dial of horrrrrroooorrrr'.....

It's like a bad scene cut from B-class movie.

Weight isn't very accurate -- lots of variability. If you are going to use weight, then be sure to use four-week rolling averages, not day-to-day weights. Only by averaging your weight over a long period like that can you account for all the noise in the system, such as your period.

I am a daily weigher too. Like others have mentioned, I don't let it get to an obsessive point, nor do I let gains discourage me. My weight management plan actually recommends daily weighing, because when you do lose weight, it is quite an incentive to lose more! And on those days I gain, I also use that as an incentive to get my butt moving and lose! I only weigh once a day, first thing in the morning (after the bathroom visit, of course!). I measure myself once a week because inches are more important than weight.

As everyone else said, weight normally fluctuates, not just because of gaining fat, but other normal bodily functions. Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so it is possible for that to result either in weight gain, or a slower weight loss. However, you should know if that's happening because your body will "reshape." There are just so many factors...personally, I KNOW when I'm in a healthy-state, and that is the number one priority to me over anything else.

Ven,

ROFL!

I will have to take a new look at my scale. Does my scale have it's own personality that calls to me. Maybe that is why I weigh myself so often. Does it call to me??? That is a question to ponder!

Melanie-
