Checking references when renting points

I am having doubts about someone who wants to rent points from me. She claims she has rented before, but the person she rented from refused to tell me how that transaction went! She practically scolded me for asking, and said it wouldn't be right to discuss it. I thought that both parties in renting were encouraged by the DIS Boards to check each others' prior rental references. It seems logical to me -- am I wrong?

I things went smoothly, I would be glad and eager to tell you. If things didn't go very smoothly, I probably wouldn't go into the details with you.

Sounds kinda odd huh?
Gotta follow the gut.

I thought the same thing -- that she would tell me if it had gone well, but she didn't want to say anything about the bad experience she had with the renter! Still, she made me feel that my asking was out of line. We ARE all encouraged to check references, aren't we?

I'd go with your gut and find a different renter.

It's a two way street. Both parties need to trust each other. If you have doubts, find a different renter.

If I'm reading this right, your issues isn't with the person trying to rent from you, but from the previous person they rented from. I wouldn't worry about it.

Maybe the previous renter is upset that their "client" is renting from you rather than from them. Or maybe they are paranoid that you are from Disney or the tax authorities checking up on her. Or maybe, she's just a kook.

I rented before buying into DVC, and nobody every checked references on either side. I'm not sure how much good references checking does - you can get a better feel by talking to the person rather than to talking to some stranger about the person.

If you have doubts about the renter personally, find another renter. But if you issue is just with this weird reference non-giver, I wouldn't worry about it.

There are some owners who rent who consider it an invasion of privacy to share anything about a rental with anyone else. Whether we agree or disagree, it is their decision to make. So even though the DIS encourages folks to check references, not every owner is willing to give a reference.

They might be concerned that Disney is trying to confirm their rental activity, but I think the more likely explanation is they just don't want to be involved in your business transaction. Times, circumstances, and people change, and just because they had a good experience with a renter doesn't guarantee that you will. They may just not want to be involved.

Their reluctance to give any kind of a reference puts you in a quandary, but that's just part of the risk you assume when you rent.

If it was me, and if I was un-easy with the reference, then I wouldn't go forward with the rental. After all, that's why you asked for the reference.

I absolutely think the person who is not in control of the reservation should check references or otherwise make sure they are comfortable with their partner in the transaction, but as the person holding the reservation, if you structure the payment terms so that if payments are missed you can cancel the ressie, I think you're pretty much covered. What are you concerned about? Do they not want to pay you up front?

An owner might be concerned about the condition of the villa after the renter left - were there problems, did they do any damage? Also just how needy is the non-member. Did they need constant reassurance, hand holding, etc?

I was taking a stroll through the renting section and was amazed that most of the points for rent that I saw had less than 10 posts.

Someone with over 30,000 posts agreeing with me, a newbie, and I thought that it might have just been me.:rotfl:
