Checking In Dilemma

The new checkin system is confusing me a bit. Will be staying Saturday night at Universal, planning to spend Sunday doing the parks there and go over to WDW for our Sunday checkin. Should I go early in the day to check in, or wait until about 4:00 or so when we are done at Universal. If I go over early and my "room ready" room doesn't meet my requests, can I ask to be assigned a room I would like better if one will be available later in the day?If I go over for a "room ready" room, what's the best time to go? Looks like going real early in the am wouldn't do much good, because people haven't checked out yet and the room couldn't possibly be cleaned.

I'm trying to get into the "any room's a good room" mindset, but we will be there for 9 days and we so loved our VWL rooms last time; I would really like to get something in roughly the same location (ie, upper floor, pool view). What's my best strategy under the circumstances? Any advice would be appreciated.

Depending what time of year you are going and what the occupancy rate is will in part tell what rooms may have even been vacant the night before. I would say it is not worth cutting into the middle of a vacation day just to run over and try and find the optimal room. Personally, I would go early (7-9am) your room most likely won't be ready but at that time they will preassign you something if it hasn't been done already. Although they won't give you a room number, you can ask things like - is it close to the elevator? If that is important to you, and the answer is no, you could than ask if anything else will be available that meets that need.
