Checking a tote bag with drinks?

Honestly, for a short trip, I wouldn't bother. I would just buy some there. Enjoy your planning and your trip :)

Put them in a cardboard box inside your duffel, with filler that is absorbent in case of a leak. Problem solved.

Here's my thought. For eight bottles of water, you aren't going to need a very large tote bag. So, if you had a tote bag that was smaller and put the water bottles in it, you really would stand the chance of having that tote bag really tossed around. Baggage handlers aren't know for their gentle handling!!!
Now...regarding putting them in checked bags....be very careful. If your bag isn't hard sided, it's easy to get a poke by something sharp. I had a bag with a hole poked in it when I got it at my destination!! Still have no idea how it happened. Anyway....that could allow your water bottles to get poked as well, and that means your stuff is now wet.
For me, that would be a lot of work just to get eight free bottles of water! But, it's up to each person to do what works best for them. I would leave the water at home, pack what I needed in my carry on bag, and not worry about any checked bags. It would be worth the cost of paying for water when I got there.

As I said previously I have put bottles of water and other drinks in my checked luggage with the rest of my belongings and have never had an issue with leaking so that is what I will do again.
Just thought if I could check a tote bag on the way there then I could take everything else in a carry on and on the way home just toss the tote bag in my carry on and avoid baggage claim once I arrive home.
But I do get that they throw the stuff around so yes I get its a bad idea to use a tote.

We don't like the taste of tap water in Disney hotel rooms, so I understand your desire to have something better. We pack a brita or Pur pitcher and a new filter. Filtering the water helps it taste better for sure. This way, we just use the cups provided in our room and have fresh-tasting water. You can stuff socks or other clean clothing into the pitcher so it doesn't take up much extra space in your suitcase. You could carry it on too, because it is empty. I think you've already settled on your plan, but just thought I'd toss you another idea for having better tasting water in your room.

For less than $10, you can have it from Amazon Pantry waiting at the resort. I wouldn't mess with it.
Our son loves Ale 8(local KY soft drink). We packed a couple of cans during a trip and they exploded. Even though they were bagged, the pop went through the bags and all his clothes were sticky/smelly and wet. Good thing we had DVC with a washer. We always rent a car (or would Uber now), he goes to Cracker Barrel to get the pop.

For the trip down, take an empty bottle through airport security, fill it after. Most have bottle fillers instead of fountains now.
Some resorts have 12 oz bottle cases for $6.99. You can also get H2O cheap at the Speedways on site.

Just not worth the hassle to take it IMO.
