Can anyone tell me recent experiences with taking a chest-type cooler when flying? We have never done this, but are considering it for our next trip. Tell me about any trouble with check-in and/or packing stuff in it for the trip.

It shouldn't be a problem. Don't seal it with duct tape or anything until after the bags have been inspected. Or if you seal it make sure inspectors can remove to look inside if they have to.

It's perfectly OK, but don't put any perishables in it. Perishables, liquids with broken seals, ice, or dry ice are not permitted, unless you are using special packaging and filling out the paperwork necessary for shipping perishables (if you do that it has to be checked as freight, not luggage.) To be sure that you are in compliance with this, an agent must inspect the contents before the cooler is accepted as checked baggage.

I use a latching luggage strap on my WheelieCool; I just run it up through the handles and secure it lengthwise.
