This site contains people's reviews of their experience with Tamiflu-quite alarming.

My dd7 had swine flu this week and I pushed for her to have tamiflu since she has been hspitalized twice with pneumonia and asthma. Within the first half hour of her first dose, she started feeling very "car sick", hanging her head over the bowl and crying hard for over two hours. It was waaaay worse than the actual flu. We stopped giving it to her and the next day she was all better.

Apparently, this is VERY common and there are also some much worse side effects-hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, violence. If I had known how common these side effects were, I would have never gotten it for my dd.

Thank you for posting this. If it educates even a few people and keeps them from taking Tamiflu you have done a huge service.

There is so much info out there about the terrible side effects of Tamiflu. Here is an article:

There are side effects from walking down the street--this does NO ONE any good as the site only posts side effects people "CLAIM" they have had-there is no accountability what so ever. My DS14 took Tamiflu with NO side effects what so ever so does that mean it is perfectly safe since that is my experience???? I could go on that site, post 100 times about horrible side effects I had taking Tamiflu--never mind I have never even taken one pill, yet people like you take it for gospel truth that this medication is evil.

I remember in 2004 there being reports of Japanese children having reactions to Tamiflu, like hallucinations, etc. My kids have had tamiflu twice, once around 2004 and again a couple of weeks ago when they had type A (H1N1 flu). The only side affects they had was nausea. Their pediatrician is very conservative with meds, and addressed the issue. He was not concerned about the rarer side affects, but said to monitor them like you would on any medication.

HIgh fever can cause hallucinations too. The flu causes nausea.

Do you know what the NUMBER ONE reported side-effect of aspirin is?....headache.

I'm not kidding. If someone taking Tylenol during the initial drug trials DIED, then the drug company would have to list DEATH as a possible side-effect.

I was thinking the same thing. My dd had the flu last spring and she had alot of the side effects of Tamiflu, without actually taking Tamiflu.

I had the H1N1 last month and I took Tamiflu with no side effects. So did DH. Last week DS was diagnosed with seasonal flu. He took Tamiflu with no problems. I think it's a bit alarmist to be so freaked out about some of the side effects of Tamiflu. Ever med has side effects.

My youngest had the flu last winter and took Tamiflu and he became violent. He was only 3 at the time, but he did turn into a completely different child. I had no idea this could be a side effect, but I did google it and saw this was a side effect and I stopped giving it to him. He was back to normal within 24 hours. I have taken Tamiflu myself with no side effects. Some people will have side effects, some people won't.

My son took Tamiflu a few weeks ago. He did get a stomach pain from it for 2 days.

My doctor went over all the side effects the OP described. The hallucinations in children do occur but are rare. They also occur with high fever so they don't know for sure what caused it.

My doctor said that if my son started to exhibit "psychotic" behavior that I should discontinue the medication.

I think some people are alarmist about everything, and enjoy taking others along for the ride. :)

I prefer to get my medical information from trusted and reliable sources. :)

Any kind of medication can cause side effects. Read the label on any prescription and it will list them all. If you do experience a side effect, call and discuss with your doctor.

I was given Demoral in the hospital once and I became crazy. DH told me I was trying to get out of bed and I remember trying to rip out the IV. I started hallucinating too. It was such a bad experience for me. Of course, the doctor told me that I should tell any future doctor about my reaction and it was noted on my file. But, most people can take that medication without any problems.

I was just in the pediatrician's office last Friday with my 12 year old daughter. He said he has not been prescribing Tamiflu to otherwise healthy kids. He said in about 15% of patients it causes vomitting which can lead to dehydration -- not something you want with the seasonal flu OR H1N1.

He also said it can make some patients altered, which is another concern.

He said she should recover fine on her own, but if her fever lasted more than 5 days OR the fever broke for a day or two and then came back, then he wanted to see her again. Both of those are indications that something else is probably going on -- i.e. pneumonia.

ETA - daughter is MUCH better and was back to school on Monday!

This is an unscientific, unregulated site. People can post ANYTHING they want. Read it with a huge grain of salt.

This is from that article you posted:
"Most of the side-effects are relatively minor – a degree of nausea, a bit of a tummy upset, the sort of thing you get quite often with antibiotics."

Straight from the tamiflu site:

http://www.tamiflu.com/isi.aspx

If you develop an allergic reaction or a severe rash, stop taking TAMIFLU and contact your healthcare professional immediately, as it may be very serious. People with the flu, particularly children and adolescents, may be at an increased risk of self injury and confusion shortly after taking TAMIFLU and should be closely monitored for signs of unusual behavior. A healthcare professional should be contacted immediately if the patient taking TAMIFLU shows any signs of unusual behavior.
The most common side effects are mild to moderate nausea and vomiting.

Also , people just because you personally didn't experience side effects, doesn't mean others didn't. You were lucky. Be thankful.

No one is being alarmist, not sure where you are seeing that-just posting some information so people can make an educated decision about something that could adversely affect their health.

Why would people have any interest in making up side effects to post online?

I know in my dd's case, she was doing fine all day, then within a half hour of taking the tamiflu, she was having bad stomach pain. I'm glad many of you didn't have any issues with it. Not sure why it bugs you so much to hear that other people do have issues with it.

I'm certainly not an expert, but I don't think it's a Tamiflu problem, but rather how certain people react to it. My doctor prescribed Levaquin for me last year and I have a habit of googling right away to see what other people have to say about things. People were talking about hallucinations, tendon problems, psychotic episodes, etc. It made me think a bit, but I ended up taking it and I was fine. I don't doubt when people have issues with a drug, but it doesn't mean that everyone will.

I'm one who would not be asking my doctor for it - simply because I can't even tolerate the most common drugs - and anything I do need to take has to be a child's dose..

I see others here who have taken it without any problems though, so I think it's a case-by-case situation - as are most side effects from medications..
