Has anyone ever got an upgrade to there room at check in? Just wondering if there is a chance at all?

Timeshares are different from hotels. Upgrades are generally only given if there's something like a maintenance problem that makes the villa they were going to put you in uninhabitable, and all of the other villas in that category are booked.

Upgrades are rare at any Disney resort. On points stays at DVC resorts, they're much rarer.

If you ASK for an upgrade and it is available, you will be charged the appropriate extra points, so it's not really an upgrade at all.

if typical hotel guests are upgraded 2% of the time, DVC guests are probably upgraded .01% of the time (usually due to maintenance issues as discussed above).

It happens - but not often. There is someone on this board who its even happened to more than once! But most of us have never been so lucky. It seems more likely to happen for a single night or maybe two (i.e. a couple of stories have been 'one night before a cruise' stories).

And yeah, don't ask. Asking is likely to result in you paying for your upgrade.

Upgrades at non-DVC many times happen because they overbook. DVC does not do that.

We have even heard of people being downgraded to a non-DVC resort when there have been problems with the reserved unit.

We were one of the really, really lucky ones. Back at Christmastime we were staying at OKW in a studio on points. When we showed up to check in the manager informed us that there was no room at the inn. It seems that there was a problem with some guests deciding to stay longer than they had reserved.

End result was that they gave us a 1-Bedroom with no additional point charges.

Ah, you truly WERE one of the lucky ones! It doesn't happen often though, and there was a good reason. Well, at least a reason. I really wish when people "self extend" they would charge them rack rate for their "extension".

It doesn't happen very often and IMO, it would be inappropriate to ask for one as some are inclined to do at hotels.

Someone on Vero Beach is in a Beach Cottage instead of the 1 bedroom they booked! How about THAT for an upgrade!

We had the Yacht Club booked right after a cruise for 1 night and got upgraded to concierge level without asking. That was nice-we booked the YC just for 1 night for a treat. The concierge level was nice for a quick breakfast and I enjoyed the extra attention-we had a balcony. I loved the pool!
Good luck!

PS. We paid cash for this room-I am sorry I did not specify that-that obviously does not apply to a reservation that is booked using points.

Yacht Club is not DVC, very different situation.

Been a member since 2001, and in about 25 trips, I've had two upgrades. One was well before I got there. They had overbooked the Jambo studios, so I got a 1 Br for two nights for the same points. By myself! I knew about this within days of booking.

The other was for three nights at BCV in a studio, before a cruise. There were maintenance problems, I think, and they gave us a water view room in the Beach Club. Not everyone would consider this an upgrade, but I was thrilled!

But generally, yes, it's rare!

We were "upgraded" once at the BWV from a standard view to a Pool/Garden view. I did not ask for it and honestly was not pleased about it. I do not know why we were chosen. It was a 6 night trip. When I expressed my preference to remain in the standard view room, the CM offered to "put us back". But since the room was ready and there was some stupid football thing on TV that my DH wanted to watch, we took it. Room was fine. View was fine, but not better than SV, IMO.

Truly, it wasn't worth it. That trip was the one I learned that the front desk CMs had access to our accounts and not all of them know what they are doing. I had to call MS when we returned home to get our account straightened out. Wasn't a problem, but it did take some of my time to get it fixed.

Anyway, upgrades are not always a good thing, at least at the BWV.

Last March we stayed at BWV and I booked a pool/garden view 1 BR. The room we were first assigned had NO view. The view was completely obscured by tree limbs. The limbs were also growing over onto the balcony. I called the front desk and requested a room change with a view. We were given a great 1 BR on the corner of the Boardwalk and Village Green. I consider it an upgrade to Boardwalk view but it was probably still pool/garden view catergory. Anyways, it was a wonderful view and a great stay. It's going to be hard staying standard view next month.

I had the exact same thing happen to me back in 2008 booked a standard view studio at BWV upon checking and without asking was given a preferred view when we returned home saw they had taken additional points out of our account...it took a few phone calls to member services but the points were returned to our account

We don't really know what the reason was that the guests extended their stay. We've read plenty of threads where guests become ill, injured, or someone even passes away and the resorts extend their stay for the emergency they are undergoing. I don't think self-extending is truly even an option if a resort is sold-out. I guess if people refuse to leave the room, but we've tried to extend our stay at OKW in the past and they just didn't have anything available so we had to move to a a different hotel.

Note to self, don't take an offered upgrade at BWV! This sounds like the car rental company philosophy!
