Check in deadline to get specific rate

How late can you check in to get a specific rate that end on that day. Example: if the rate ends on the 20th (either code or season) and you can not actually arrive until 2:00 am on the 21st can you still get that rate?? What is the latest they would let you check in and still be counted as check in on the "day before" so that you can get the "cheaper" rate??

I am thinking that if your ressie starts on the 20th (the last date of the rate) the fact that you won't technically check in until the 21st should not matter. A night's stay technically encompasses two different days.
