I know I'm being overly protective and ridiculous (it can be a mom thing :)
but, does my son go into check in alone, or can parents come along?

thanks,!

He has to do the process alone. But you can come to help him move in afterwards. There is a parents section where they keep you guys entertained while he checks in.

Oh thanks for asking this! My parents are coming down and I was wondering what they'd be doing while I'm going through my 1,000 stages of check-in. Because, ya know, it's sooo hard to find something to do in Orlando. Haha

Thanks. I'm a nervous wreck! My kid has an awesome work ethic, but he's the kind of person who CANNOT plan ahead (drives me nuts, because I can), and he's not great at gathering and retaining a ton of information, so I just know he's going to miss something, and I'm freakin that it will be something too important!

I would NOT advise bringing a birth certificate. Birth certificates are very important, especially since you can't get a reprint (at least not easily). I would keep that safe and at home. The CP website says that for check-in if you have your passport you are set since that is essentially the only document that they'll let you use by itself as identification. Even with that being said you should bring more forms of ID with you just in case, especially since passports are also very important and more difficult to get replaced than a simple Driver's Licence. If you have a passport, a driver's license/driver's permit/DMV issued ID card, and SS card you are 100% set identification wise. You'll have the piece that has the most weight (passport) and two back ups. Also, you're SS card is important on its own if you don't have your SS # memorized even though you should. If that card gets lost or stolen just like with your birth certificate you're kind of out of luck though people do manage to go through lengths and pains to get new ones.

You can sit and wait for him in the parents area while he's checking in. It takes what seems like a long time and you want be particularly well entertained. This will be much easier in January than it was in August, though. It's hard to go do something else if you have his stuff in your car since you don't know exactly when he'll be finished. After he's finished, you can help move him in to wherever he's assigned, which won't happen until that day. He'll have a few hours of freedom after that, but will likely be sheduled that evening and the next day. You won't have a permit to get back into the complex once you drive out either. :)

So...How would this work- We're driving 2 cars down, both will have my DD's belongings. My DD and I are taking 1 car to check in while my DH is driving her BF to the airport for his flight home. When he gets back from the airport will my DH be able to bring the other car to Vista, if we're still there, or to her assigned apt complex? Or will we need a parking permit to get it in that day?

I would say that your best bet would be to call the Housing Office and ask about that. I know normally your daughter would have to meet them at the front gate, but since she is just checking in, not sure how that would work. Here is the number for the Housing Office: 407-827-7721

If any of you will be at February 21st check in, would you please adopt me for the day? I don't think I'm going to have anyone coming down from MA with me.

I actually went to replace a lost social security card about two weeks ago, in preparation for my CP. It wasn't difficult at all. I printed a one-page form off the SS website, filled it out, took it to the local office (you can mail it in, too), and received my new SS card in the mail about 10 days later. Not difficult at all.

Getting a new one? Easy. Trying to fix incorrect information on it? Incredibly difficult. I don't know how they had my birthday on file as the day before my actual birthday!

We had two cars with us on checkin day, my DD's car which she is using there now and our car with most of her stuff (her call is small and doesn't hold as much). I cannot recall exactly how it worked, but I believe we both received a day parking pass which allowed for us to go in and out of the complex all day long. While she attended her traditions calls, we helped to set up her room and I will warn you...we had to go get some cleaning supplies at Walmart because the apartment was really dirty. My husband went back and forth with his vehicle and didn't have any issues. Your husband should not have any problems running to the airport and then coming back to housing. If he is not entering at the same time as you, I would print out an extra copy of the confirmation so he can bring it with him when he does arrive. I don't think he should have any issues.

Thanks, Iris. Sounds like it should work out fine. Except I wasn't planning on cleaning!;) Thanks for the heads up!

I've heard other stories of some apartments being dirty. It sounds like some buildings (complexes) have more dirty apartments than others. Which complex was this specific filthy apartment in? Vista?

It is Vista...she is currently in Vista but moving over to Chatham for her extension.

Most of the people we spoke to that day also had rather dirty apartments. They were supposed to have been cleaned before their arrival but truthfully it was more of just a light surface cleaning. I know I am a bit of a neat freak but my daughter who does not care as much was even grossed out by it all.

I have also heard of the stories too and didn't believe it until we actually got there.

All the CS people were put in Vista...they did not get to choose their location so all of them ended up there. She has actually enjoyed Vista because it is so close to everything and rather easy to get to work from there but she is so ready to move over to Chatham in January.
