Let me see if I understand you want a room for one night to get the dinning perks. You realize you will one get one days worth of dinning. Your dinning plan is based on how many nights you book your hotel room for.
Yep! I did exactly this a couple of months ago. In a 48 hour period, we had full meals (one lunch and two dinners,) at HDDR, Fulton's and Kona, plus snacks. We had more food available than our stomachs could possibly hold! It was fantastic! Our meals alone came out to be more money than the cost of adding the premium plan.
Is this true for anyone over 18 or any "Disney" adult (over 10)? I have two kids that are Disney adults and I didn't factor this upcharge in to my planning.
If ya wanna save money and still stay onsite so to speak, I'd advise the Doubletree on Disney's Hotel Boulevard. Its right inside the gates so you get that Disney Magic of entering on property. Its a 3 minute drive to Downtown Disney, has a good restaurant, large pool with fountains, etc and even a small Disney Store inside. Best of all its all suites! Plenty of room for a family of five to stretch out after a long day at the Parks.
We booked earlier this year at $89/night for our trip last week and included free continental breakfast. Oatmeal, bananas, pastries, etc goes a long way to fill up the belly before hitting the parks. Pizza Hut served in room, Disney Channels and all the stuff across the street if you wanna save money by eating at restaurants like you have in your own town or hit Walmart for rain ponchos, stuff like that. We've stayed all over Disney property but come back to this place because of its location. Easy in, easy out. $89 plus breakfast is a lot easier to stomach than $250+ night.
I vote for booking a campsite. We are campers and I won't be mad at you for getting a good deal If it is during the week and not during the holidays no one will know if the spot is suppose to be occupied or not. There will be lots of empty spots!
What is the cheapest way for a family of 5, (4 adults and one teen,) to book a room on property in order to qualify for the dining plan? We will be stying off property and just want to grab the room for one night in order to participate in the dining perks.

However, the OP wants to stay onsite just to be able to get the DDP. If they stay at the Doubletree they won't qualify for the DDPs. Ft Wilderness would be their best bet.
