Hi all! :wave2:
We were at WDW a couple weeks ago and we went to one of the outlet malls...the one that has a Disney outlet. I really thought they would not have any pins but they DID!!! We were so excited...LOTS of pins for $3 each and then there were the "mystery" 2 packs of pins (they are tiny..little stick figures of family members..mom,dad, kids, baby, cat, dog, etc) and they were $2!!!!!! We bought quite a few of those and used them for traders on our Disney Cruise!!! They are small pins and I always feel a little bad trading them ...but they are real Disney pins...bought them at a Disney store!!! Besides the pins they have at that store I thought they had a lot of other good deals...nice t-shirts, etc for $7-$8...stuffed animals, etc. I bought a great pirate shirt ( to wear on pirate night on the cruise) for $7!!!! Anyone that has time to check it out while in the WDW area....it is the Prime Outlet on International Drive...could save you lots of $$$ on souveniers!!!

We found the same 2-packs this past sunday at the premium outlets on vineland ave

I buy mine on eBay before I leave. I average about $1 - $1.50 (including shipping) per pin for the regular size ones.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I've bought the trader pins this way for our last couple of trips. Long as your careful who you buy from and what you are buying. I always check out the reviews of the buyer, particularly looking for any negative feedbacks and reading what those said. I also won't buy from anyone with a rating less the 98% and has hundreds of sales under their belt.

The rating and/or feedback have nothing to do with the quality of pins. If you are paying around a buck for pins off ebay, you are buying counterfeit pins. Especially from those who have "hundreds of sales."

There are several excellent threads on the collectors boards regarding buying pins from ebay that have great information of counterfeit or "scrapper" pins.

TO OP, even though they are "small" pins, they are authentic Disney pins and a GREAT DEAL!!! Please don't buy counterfeit pins on ebay..I would much rather see authentic "stick figure" pins than scrappers!

How do you or how would I know they are counterfeit? I just bought some from ebay too?:scared1:

The counterfeit pins look very similar to authentic pins. If you are a new pin trader, or have never seen or held a "scrapper" it is extremely hard to tell.

The easiest way to tell is that if you bought a "lot" of pins that are mostly "hidden mickey's" or "cast lanyards" from a seller who is selling huge lots of pins for around a buck..they are scrappers.

Authentic Disney pins start at around $8-$20 each! The sellers on ebay that are selling scrappers ARE Powersellers with 100% (or close) feedback. Trouble is, the people who are buying these pins either..

a) don't know what they are buying is fake or
b) know they're fake but want to pay the cheapest price per pin no matter what the ramifications there are for other traders.

So, they won't have negative feedback in either case.

There are several DISer's, myself included, that have been educating unsuspecting ebay pin buyers to this problem, I would encourage you to visit the collector's board for more info (sorry, don't have the link, but you can search by posts that I responded to).

If you can imagine the problems trading these pins cause, I would hope that those trading them would reconsider. If you have one scrapped pin, that you trade with a CM, that ONE pin could essentially be traded hundreds of times to different people of all ages. So an avid collector or even a child who trades an authentic pin gets really excited to trade for a pin with a CM only to find it is a cheap "knock off" Now, imagine this happening TENS OF THOUSANDS of times over and you can see how damaging buying and trading scrappers really is!

There are those that will say, "well I'm not an avid collector" or "it's just for my kids, they don't care, " etc. But neither of those excuses are valid. Whether an unknowing child or serious collector, infiltrating the pin trading community with scrappers hurts everyone...PLEASE don't do it!!

I can tell you, that if you bought a "lot" of pins from an ebay seller, who has several auctions of the same type (usually selling hundreds, or lots of hundreds, or custom lots, etc) for around $1, 99.9999999999% of the time, they are fake! I would encourage you to send them back for a refund and buy authentic Disney pins as inexpensively as you can (like the OP).

Please keep in mind, Disney pin trading is NOT a cheap hobby, it is extremely expensive. However you can keep the costs down by buying authentic Disney pins is great, but PLEASE don't buy scrappers because they cost less out of your pocket...they really cost a lot of enjoyment for every other trader!

Not everyone who sells pins on ebay is selling counterfeit pins. I did go to the DIS board collectors board and did my research and asked a lot of questions, before buying off of ebay. I was just trying to express, quickly I might add, some of the precautions I use to ensure I am getting authentic pins. I've also used the DIS to research sellers and gotten feedback from people here. Have I gotten fake pins before, yes, 2 of them during my first few single buys. Now I buy pin lots. If I buy a lot of 100 for $150, it works out to $1.50 a pin.

Consider this-If a Disney employee walked in and bought a bunch of those $2 pins the OP mentioned and was able to use their discount. Then separate the pins into single pins and have them listed on ebay. Even in a lot at $1.50/pin total the seller made $3 on the said pins. Making a profit. According to you though, I just bought counterfeit pins because I paid about a $1 off of ebay.

Are there counterfeit pins on ebay? Absolutely, agree with you 100%. But just because someone pays a minimal amount doesn't make the pins counterfeit. There are stories about people who have paid hundreds of dollars for items off ebay, only to have the item turn out to be counterfeit. I was just trying to tell the Op to be cautious and aware of what she is buying and from who she is buying.

ETA-When/If I do find a scrapper, it is tossed out of the trade pile. My DD has kept one of them, a Minnie, that she put in her keeper bag (one of the big pin trading bags), but she knows it is a scrapper and keeps it because she likes it, not because of its value, or lack there of.

I did/do the same thing. I've gotten some great pins from sellers recommended on these boards off eBay.

To clarify, I did not say everyone who sells pins on ebay is selling counterfeit pins, clearly they are not. I have sold my personal pins for much less than I paid for them on ebay and they are authentic.

What I did say is that if you are buying pins in large lots, like yours, they are likely fake. I cannot say that with 100% certainty, as there will likely be a few exceptions to that rule. Using the DIS for information on credible sellers is great! There is invaluable information here, that is the main point I'm trying to make. Since you quickly noted two things you look out for are things that do not indicate a credible seller, that is what I was addressing.

Common sense dictates that the likelihood that someone selling thousands and thousands of pins, over and over again, is that they are buying scrappers from China. To your point, I am sure there will be an exception here or there where they are trying to sell their personal collection at deeply discounted prices. But they are in the stark minority on ebay, if they exist at all.

As a side note, CM's do not get their discount at the outlets, only 10% on occasion at the discretion of the outlet store. And I would bet that store didn't even have more than a hundred or so, if even that. Even if they did, I would have no objection of someone selling them online for a profit. They are REAL pins, so why would anyone care? If they're in the right place and can buy REAL pins and sell them for a profit, so be it. I'm all for free enterprise as long as it doesn't hurt anyone or a community. Buying and selling fake pins..does.

To reiterate, NO not EVERYONE who sells Disney pins inexpensively on ebay is selling fakes.

YES, use information on the DIS to get great info on ebay sellers.

This is not about the VALUE of the pin, or the lack therof. I don't buy pins to keep as in investment, nor do I toss one because it may be old or bent, or whatever. What I am talking about is damaging the value of pin trading in general by infiltrating huge amounts of fake pins. Whether or not you mind if they're fake or wish to keep it not is not my point. It's knowingly trading scrappers that is what I'm addressing. By all means, keep what you like, that's not what I'm trying to convey.

HOWEVER, if a seller is selling hundreds or thousands of pins for around a buck a piece, over and over and over again, they are fake-it's just common sense.

I am not trying to do anything other than educate the inexperienced trader about counterfeit/scrapper pins. There are many traders who, quite innocently, may buy fake pins on ebay and not know it. I offered the information I have, now what they do with the information is up them.

I love to pin trade, and encourage everyone who is interested to do it to..it is a BLAST!! But it is NO FUN when dealing with huge amounts of fake pins being traded over and over...that is not how pin trading was intended to be. Just my .02

How can I tell if the ones I purchased are scrappers or fake? I won't use them if they are.

There are some sites that carry photos of the real pins and descriptions of the scrapper pins (I use pinpics). If there is no description, its really hard to tell what is/isn't authentic.

Also, disney comes out with lots of new pins all the time and thus it can be hard to keep up with what is/isn't new. I purchased a lot for trading and it had a bunch of pins that at first glance I was suspicious about. Turned out, they were a bunch of the brand new cast lanyards that had just been released a month or so prior to my purchase (I did end up with one scrapper of an old pin that I pulled).
