My dad's 20 year old pay as you go phone is no longer working (I'm sure the minutes expired). He hasn't used it in any way except to tell time in at least 5 years. He just noticed he couldn't make calls (tried calling his house phone, the only number he knows). He is insisting on me getting him a new one (just like he insisted I renew his AAA membership, even though we took his car from him). He never leaves the house alone.

I have to get him one because he is going to drive me crazy until I do. It has to be very simple and cheap (since he is never going to use it).

^^Agree with prior poster. Probably be easier to get the $100 card so you only have to worry about refilling it every 90 days. Right now, tracfone has a $15 off the $100 card.

i got my mom a Doro Easy phone and a $20/mos plan from Consumer Cellular. They specialize in seniors. You can pick the phones up in Target, too.

Tracfone $100 for a year service, there are sometimes refurbished phones on the website too, I got one of ours for $5

Try consumer cellular. $10.00 or less per month. They have many options to chose from.

I had this same issue a couple years ago. I had been paying for a phone for my grandmother (dementia) and she never used it, always thought it was broke when she just forgot how to turn it on or forgot to charge it. Still I liked the idea of her having it because if nothing else, mine and my sister's numbers were programmed in there and someone could contact us if needed. (and they did a couple of times) We were changing our plan and it would have bumped the cost of her phone up from $9.99 to $14.99. I called AT&T and they had an emergency type program for $10 a month. I decided to switch her to a Go Phone plan but that required topping it off every 3 months. This would essentially cost the same and both plans would be just tossing money down the drain. The first person I spoke with would not budge on this and I told her to just shut off the phone. After a little bit, a supervisor called me and asked why I wanted to shut it off. I explained the situation, elderly woman with dementia that literally never used the phone and that I couldn't see myself paying every couple of months when the money would either expire or accumulate but in both cases would go to waste. He set it up so that I would pay a flat $20 that would not expire for three years. After that it would $20 a year. Sadly, she passed just after the three year mark.

TL;DR Call your provider, they may have a plan for this type of situation. There are many plans for people who cannot afford full service, you just have to dig until you find them.

For the record, I knew even without service my grandma would have been able to dial 911 from the phone or that someone would be able to find our numbers in the phone if needed.

Page Plus Cellular They are $10 every 120 days for service. Each minute is .10.

Thanks everyone! I went with consumer cellular, $30 phone, $10 a month, without having to worry about topping off. Auto pay every month on his credit card, which I pay.

Safe link offers free phones and monthly minutes to elderly people. I volunteer at Elder Services and a lot of the clients use this service.

I let his AAA and ARP memberships lapse. Money isn't an issue - his monthly expenses are around $8000, he will be in a home in a year or 2, and then his money will really dwindle until he is eligible for Medicaid.

Understandable just thought I'd point that out that AAA discount

And that's great information! I've had AAA since I wa 17 and my parents out me on their policy. Both of our drivers are on our policy, as well. For us, we always end up ahead with it.

I just buy the cheapest card with 60 minutes. They are all good for 90 days.

Is he in assisted living now?

Is he in assisted living now?
No, he has a live in, which is over $4000 a month. His property taxes alone are over $1000 a month, supplemental health insurance is over $500, food, utilities, landscaper, cleaning lady, home maintenance, prescriptions... Alzheimer's coupled with losing your incredibly healthy spouse to an aggressive cancer really messes with your carefully crafted retirement plans.
