At my home in northern NJ, a few years ago I cancelled our cable package because it was almost $200 and signed up for wi-fi ONLY. It started out being $50/mo but this month went up to $95 (after a raise in between). It does not provide phone (I have OOMA) or any television cable services (even tho we still get around 15 channels). Anyone have suggestions for discounted wi-fi services???

Do you have xfinity? Sounds like you have the gig internet. Xfinity has
Different plans. I wouldn’t get anything less than the gig. It’s not actually a gig but everything is instant.

I had the same problem with Xfinity a couple years ago. I was paying over $200 for internet cable and phone. They told me they couldn’t lower the price, even if I stopped cable tv and phone. I cancelled service. I switched internet to dsl from local phone company. I also put an antenna in my attic, and bought a TIVO. Brought the total cost down to under $100, including Netflix and Hulu.

Only problem was DSL was slow (5mb) and not terribly reliable.

I got a text from T Mobil last week offering home internet over cell for $50 a month all in for 50mb service. It’s a limited test, but they want to expand nationwide next year, with a focus on suburban and rural areas where choices are limited. The new modem is being delivered tomorrow.

Did you check for Verizon FiOS? They usually have good introductory offers and their service/reliability is the best broadband I've experienced yet. After your intro period ends, they'll jack their price up to $200 a month or more just like your current cable company, but when that happens, switch back and get an intro offer from cable.

I have unlimited data on my wireless plan and I have considered dropping all my cable including wifi and living with just the cell service which can be tethered from my phone to other wifi devices. I do not watch too much TV but would like to be able to stream shows/sports on occasion. I have streamed many times over wireless (traveling, football tailgates, etc) and have never had a problem. I wonder if this is an option.

For wireless I have a family plan with AT&T and I have a "cap" on my data before it gets throttled. But in the 3+ years that I have had unlimited data, I have never noticed any slow down and every month we have gone WAY over our cap by 3 to 4 times the cap (family plan includes me, my wife and 2 college aged kids).

My friend at work just tried this. He only last a couple days before he called Spectrum and had the internet turned back on. He said his TV worked fine, but he never could get his laptop to connect to it. The biggest reason for him was because he realized his Nest cameras wouldn't work without wireless and he relies on those to know when his 6th grade daughter gets off the bus.

My provider has two options. They will provide the cable modem and WiFi router (more expensive) or you can just get the cable modem and provide your own WiFi router (less expensive). Also depending on your provider you might be able to buy your own cable modem from a place like Best Buy or Amazon and eliminate a monthly rental fee to cut costs.

I own my on WiFi router but unfortunately can not buy my own cable modem as I have phone with it and need to use their modem.
