Cheap Tax Prep

My husband in in the National Guard and is a teacher. I work VERY part time at our church. Tax prep gets complicated (especially with his Army W2) and we usually have it done somewhere. H&R Block is usually $200-$300! Anyone know of a place to get them some that won't cost usama arm an a leg? Possibly a military discount?

If your income is within the limits, this is a great option. Try to find one that takes appointments, because I tried to use a location last year that did not give appts., and the line was out the door and they were overbooked within a half hour of opening. This was on a weekend, though. I'm thinking weekdays might be less crowded, too.

Check with local attorney offices. I know I am in Iowa where prices may be cheaper, but at our office if all you have is a few W-2's it would probably be less than $100.

Have you tried TAXACT or TURBOTAX? Both are online, guided processes with detailed questions and input instructions. Very user friendly. I have used TAXACT for years and have never had a problem. The cost to e-file my return was $9.95 and I got my refund deposited into my bank account this week.

Possibly a military discount?

Depending on your gross income this might work for you. Very easy, they walk you through everything.

If your husband is a USAA member, you can get a discount on Turbo Tax.

If you want to use a professional preparer, ask your friends who they use. I work for a CPA and for basic returns, our rates are cheaper than H&R Block.

I have used Turbo Tax for about 15 years? Maybe more. It takes you thru step by step. And I have had some complications, selling stock, inheriting stock, refinancing, etc, even DH living and working, in another state across the country. (saved a bunch on state taxes, since he was living and working in Nevada/ yes rented apartment, utility bills, drivers license all there).
