Cheap fix for leather sofas?

This is entirely above my level of expertise. My grandparents have dark brown leather sofas and a couple cats that use the corners for scratching posts. They are destroyed but new sofas are not in the budget. I would like to do something to make them look at least a little better. I was looking for duct tape but after looking in 5 stores, can't find any in the right color (though I was really tempted to go with cute little gingerbread men). We did not find any patches but did find some canvas that is pretty much the exact same color. I figure I have a few choices 1) order duct tape online and hope that it is close to the right color when it gets here 2) get the canvas and cover it with clear duct tape or 3) get the canvas and apply something to the back that will let it stick to the leather. As I said, the sofas are destroyed, scratched open down to the frame on just about every corner. I'm not trying to make them look brand new, just better and though I try to be, I'm really not that crafty when it comes to stuff that doesn't involve power tools and screws.
