Cheap cell phone options for families? Republic Wireless?

Looks like I may be too late, but here is another vote for Ting. We used to have Verizon and paid about $165/month for 2 smartphones. Now we have Ting (have had for over a year) and we pay no more than $50/month for 2 smartphones. And they have amazing customer service. We have never had a problem in over a year.

ITA but where can i buy a cheap ting phone for the service?

We have been very happy with Page Plus, $30 per month for like 1200 minutes/3000 text/500mb data. They operate on the Verizon prepaid network. Depending on the location it may or may not be a good choice. More likely than not, you will get good coverage, they have maps. You can use a Verizon-branded 3G smartphone (non-prepaid), which those are readily available on eBay etc... or you can buy a phone from Page Plus themselves.

kittyforums.net is a good resource for information on all that stuff.

Most Sprint phones will work. Check the "white list" on Ting for all the supported phones.

I got mine from Craigslist. As long as the ESN is good (you can check that on Ting, too) then you should be golden. I got a Motorola Photon, and it has been great. Not the latest and greatest, but a huge improvement from the Samsung Replenish that I had previously!
