I am annoyed!

I need to close an account over the phone to avoid a new $12 service charge they are beginning as I don't live local and can't waltz into a bank to do it.

They did a random "public records" security question test....Involving obscure residences of my college past and cars we may or may not have owned (I don't remember years and on the third question, we had owned 2 of the 3!). It is like being on multiple choice jeopardy. The college addresses involved multiple numerical streets and a name she couldn't pronounce.

So I get to call back tomorrow when the questions will reset to some other potentially obscure question from my past that is public record. Grrrrrrr!

I'm happy they are trying to keep my account safe--but that is ridiculous!

(oh--and you have to get BOTH questions correct! I don't have time to study my background check for the past 18 years!)

We are having a similar issue with a different bank & a 90 year old Grandma that has Alzheimer's & they expect her to remember a security question.

At an FI I used to work for those questions were generated from your credit report. If you have a recent copy of yours you might be able to get the information from it.

Good call!

Thanks!

I'll print one up and use that.

that would explain the car question problem--*I* didn't actually own one of the cars, my husband did. But after all this time, it just all blends together. But scary--are credit reports "public record" now? B/c she said several times that it was "public records" data.

We had a similar thing happen when we last moved. We called to change the address and we had to verify the phone number on the account. Whatever they had we were unable to come up with even after giving every home, work and cell number from the last 10 years that we could remember (and we thought we were doing pretty good). We finally just canceled the account which they let us do since we couldn't come up with the phone number on the account even though we knew everything else.

They might be getting the info from a public record search instead. Those aren't cheap (at least not to automate) and Chase is a big place. We were smaller and since we pulled a credit report for all members it was more cost effective to use those.

I thought it was credit report generated because the make and model of cars on past loans, former addresses, aka's, and banks you had credit cards through were what got pulled.

I'd rather have the security than not have it. Identity theft is far to rampant not to.

I couldn't remember my verizon password (FYI, I have different ones for email, cell, and landline, with different requirements), and my security questions was "what is your favorite book." I KNOW I never chose this as my security question! How about "what is your favorite color?" "What is your favorite food?"

Don't forget Chase will also close your account via bank by mail. They would just require you to mail them a letter with your instructions (such as please close this account and send the proceeds to my address on file), and sign the document.

If you give up on the phone call, just ask for the bank by mail department information and write a letter. They compare your signature on the letter to your signature card.

Much easier in my opinion.
