Hi all.

Like many of you I got the Southwest Chase card during the 50000 points offer. I paid a $69 fee and this worked out to be a great deal for getting a couple of tickets to MCO.

My renewal and annual fee were due on 11/1. I called this week to cancel the card. I wanted to let you know that in addition to the 3000 points for renewing the card and paying the $69 fee, the retention department offered me an additional 3000 points if I kept the card active (this was after telling them I would like to cancel). Not certain if this will work for everyone, but if you plan to keep the card...may as well try for 6000 points instead of 3000 for your $69 fee.

I actually like this card well enough, however I have a miles earning card from my bank that is fee free to me.

Hope this helps someone.

Interesting....thanks for the heads - up.

Wasnt sure what I was going to do for sure when the renewal came up, so might give this a try.

Hmmm... I got 2 last December..one for me and 1 for my DH. Between the 2 cards, the intial 50K miles, AND the usage.... We got 8 (!!!!) Round trip tix to MCO this year for nothing OOP.

BUT - I stopped using it last month b/c I figured I'd close it before the next renewal anyway. Now I have to decide if 12K miles (between 2 cards) is worth the $140 fee. :confused3

Thank you for the information. I called because it was renewal time and they gave me an extra 3000 miles also. Great news because now I have plenty to get my flight!

can anyone tell me how quickly you got your bonus points after opening this card? My first billing statement ends on 10/10, I'm wondering if I'll see the bonus then?

thanks. sadly I missed out on the 50k and am only getting 25k :sad1:
Better than nothing I guess.

Good information to have! Thanks!

May I ask another question? Is there any expiration on those 5000 points? I still haven't used mine yet. Do you have to use it before your renewal date?

We are approaching our dates as well and I was debating on whether to cancel it or not. I definitely appreciate this information because I may cancel but might stay if they offer an incentive.

I posted this on the Southwest Thread, but just came across this thread, so I thought I would also put it on here. ....

Both my husband and I have the SW Visa cards. I have a balance of 12,551 reward points and my husband has approximately 58,300 points. I am definitely going to cancel my Visa card. Not sure what to do with my husband's card.

Can anyone tell me how long these reward points will remain active? I have read somewhere that they remain active for 2 years. If that is the case, I may cancel both cards. If they are going to take away my reward points, it might be to our benefit to go ahead & pay the $69 fee for my husband's Visa card just to be assured that we keep the points.

I am going to be billed in mid-November for these cards, so if anyone has this information, I would appreciate a response.

It used to be any activity in a 2 year period kept the points active (you can also shop online etc)
But a simple call to them would clarify for you,
Meanwhile, for anyone that is canceling the card...realize that you will get a DING on each of your three credit reporting scores.....your debt ratio will change....so IF you will be looking to refi, go for any type loan or have any outstanding floating loan...just be aware of this and possible ramifications...
