I was just in Chase closing my dad's account and inquired about the Chase Disney debit card account.

He said that as of Feb. 8, that card is no more. If you open an account before then, you can be grandfathered in.

Just fyi....

Well, I'm glad my husband got his last year! We get tons of points from that.

it doesn't seem as if they really gave it a chance to take off. I had never heard of it until someone said something here on dis. and I have 2 chase cc accts.

What!!! I have had mine since the day they began offering it, and that little piece of plastic makes me so happy. :cloud9: Just seeing Mickey and the gang every time I pull my card out of my wallet makes me smile so big -- and so many clerks & cashiers have smiled big and commented on it too! And the Disney reward dollars are the icing on the cake. I mean, I use my debit card for everything anyway, I love getting rewarded for doing that. Our visit to 'Ohana next month will be completely paid for, tip & all, with my rewards card, and it paid for the Dessert Party too.

I wonder if they're going to change the rewards plan at all for those of us who have the cards??

As I said in my OP, people who have the accounts will be able to keep them, just no new ones.

Wish Disney would partner with a Credit Union. Chase is about to become a distant memory.

good riddance! I looked in to the debit card so i could compare it to the Disney Visa Credit Card I have (both companies were Chase) and there was literally ZERO incentive to go to debit (unless of course you have an issue with spending and do better with debit). You get way more Disney dollars with the CC! Anywho, i'm sorry for those that wanted it and cant get it but i love my CC!

We don't have a Chase nearby, but I've been debating on this darn little card for awhile now. Anyone think it's worth it if you don't have a Chase branch nearby?

We just changed our debit yesterday from the UR to the Disney rewards because there is no fee for additional cards, as with the UR you have to pay 25 per card per year.. With the Disney Rewards debit you earn the same amount of rewards per dollar, yet additional cards are free up to four. Welp glad well be grandfathered in :lovestruc

Yes they credit you $25 in reward dollars the first year.
All chase debit reward program cards have that fee. It quickly pays for itself.

FWIW, I just called and spoke with a really, really nice guy who gave me a bit more info. He said that for current card holders, reward dollars will continue to accrue for the rest of this year, and will expire two years after that.

He also submitted a formal complaint to corporate on my behalf (and worded it better than I could have!) and did say to tell all my "Disney friends." He said that they (corporate) do weigh those formal complaints to a fair degree, and that if they start getting enough of them they might reverse their (stupid, IMO) decision. So if you like the card like I do, then please do call the number on the back of it and lodge a complaint. :goodvibes

Yes - why would you need a branch? I've never been in one and have had the card since day one.

I worked for Visa International for years and years so let me explain how reward cards work. Disney and Chase (or any Visa bank they want) negotiate an agreement. Somebody has to pay for these rewards. It's business deal - it may even count that Disney uses Chase for business funds. It can get very complicated. It's all about money. It really had nothing to do with what customers want. The bottom line is do Chase and Disney make money by keeping this agreement or not. If not they drop it.

I've had rewards cards that changed banks every few years. I know that LL Bean did it a few years ago..

Am I reading this correctly?

"It's so simple it seems like magic.
You earn 0.5% in Disney Dream Reward DollarsSM on everyday qualifying purchases made with your debit card.1, 2 For every $200 in qualifying non-PIN purchases on the debit card, you earn 1 Disney Dream Reward Dollar. 1 Disney Dream Reward Dollar is worth $1 when redeeming for Disney products and offerings."

So everytime time you spend 200.00 you get 1.00? I think I will stick with the rewards card I have I get rewards for every 3.00 I spend.

Chase is about to become a distant memory.

Why do you say that?

We don't have a Chase nearby, but I've been debating on this darn little card for awhile now. Anyone think it's worth it if you don't have a Chase branch nearby?

I have branches all around, but you don't need a branch. They have a very simple interface to transfer money in from and out to other places (in my case a credit union).

The issue is that they aren't going to have free accounts unless you meet certain requirements...I had a free account that was supposed to be forever (they said they were keeping that when they stole wamu, I mean, bought it from a "fence", I mean the government grr) but as of 2/1 that's going to change. To keep the Chase account we'll now have to have a direct deposit of $501 (500 is required but we're doing 501 just be sure LOL) into it.

So be sure it actually meets your needs...

So everytime time you spend 200.00 you get 1.00? I think I will stick with the rewards card I have I get rewards for every 3.00 I spend.

Remember, it's a *debit* card, so it's not going to be as good as a CC where they are hoping we'll pay interest. And it's Disney specific, with a cute design on the front etc etc, and getting disney rewards dollars has a high value, so I feel it's only to be expected that the earnings would be slower.

It's why you have to make sure it meets your needs before signing up...

I'm glad you updated with that information on rewards accruing through the end of the year, but I'll be REALLY disappointed to loose this card too. I get a lot of pleasure from seeing the castle or tink every time we use it too. And I also get a lot of pleasure saving up every month for Disney specific rewards - being able to say "This month we have enough to eat a table-service dinner" etc.

:sad2:
