After reading all the previous posts about the nasty things Chase was doing I shouldn't have been surprised but still...

We got our credit card bill for our CC we use for gas (get 5% rewards back on gas, we pay in full every month). It had a late fee of $39.99 on it. I asked DH if he paid it on time and he told me that he probably did and went to check. Online it stated the bill was paid Sept 9th, the same date the bill was due. He called up Chase to ask why we were charged a late fee when we paid on the due date and they told us that since it was after 4pm central time it was considered late!!! They refused to remove the late charge and told us we should have called them on Sept 9 because for $17 we could have made sure our payment was on time!!

He called three times and talked to three different reps and all three said there was no way the charge could be removed. DH was so pissed that he cancelled our card immediately so now we have to get a new one. Anyone know any good gas card deals?? ;)

I heard of a lot but I never heard of paying the bill on its due date and still being charged a late fee!!!!

I typed my response to get it out of my system, then deleted it to keep it out of yours. :lmao:

Actually, that policy is standard for many credit cards, just like at the bank where you have until 4pm (my bank) to make a deposit count for that day (to clear). More ways to mess with the public.
In years past, credit card companies would do a courtesy and waive the fee, but they are desperate to make as much money as they can off all of us, so
BEWARE .......payments should really be made earlier than your due date to safeguard yourself for a repeat performance, some fees are even MORE, what a rip off!!
Meanwhile, that late fee and cancel of card goes against you on your credit report. Be sure to request in writing that you want that account closed at Customers request, to document the account for the three credit reporting agencies. You will actually see that wording on your credit report, if not, it will say closed and show you were late, which MAY work against you for ANY type credit or loan request.
Hope you find a better card...........:wizard:

That's been one of those new "standard" things for a while now. My Amex says that payments received after noon will not be credited until the next day, so that would lead to a late fee if it arrives in the afternoon (that's been one of the terms for a couple of years now with them). I believe my Citibank card has a 5pm cutoff

This happened to me when I last paid my Shell card. I forgot about the difference in time and I was sunk since it clearly states on the website that any payment after a certain time won't be applied until the next day. My fault for paying so late. :(

Hmmm, this is weird. Well, first it's very wrong and I would be livid if they give me the date to pay on then say even though I paid it that day it was late and charged me a fee! Unbelievable!!
That said, I experienced something different. I have a regular chase card I've had since '90 and then my disney visa I got May '08. One time I raced home to get my payment in on the date it was due, before midnight. Well, the date of payment showing was the next day and I was shocked! So I called and told her what was going on and she said that's cause it was past the cutoff but that there was a 24 hr grace period and that I would not get any late fee! I will say I've done that since then, not realizing the cutoff was 4 or so, several times, and still no late fee! :confused3
And, I've done it with both cards and again verified no late fees charged to either card! Guess I'm very lucky! Now I hope I haven't jinxed myself now, lol!

I had a Macy's card that I got just to get a bigger discount on a prom dress for DD. I went to pay early in the day on the day it was due and it said the payment would not be credited to my account for two days!! What? Why give me a due date if that's really not when it's due to get it paid on time? They would only remove half the fee and I won't use the card again!

I feel everyones pain, check this one out!!! It was my mistake, but they treated me like I was a piece of poo!

....So anyway, my DW and I have a regular chase card that we have been using for a few years. We got it together when we got married. We have never been late a day, never been over the limit, in fact I don't think we have ever even paid it any later than a week before it was due. So, a few months ago, I thought I would be proactive and pay it really early to get it out of the way. Apparently that was a stupid move, here is what happened.....

....I payed the monthly bill on the day the statement came out (we get the e-statement) So, that was fine, but here is where things went wrong. I payed it again at the begining of the next month, but this time I just logged on to the site, made a payment (we have a set amount budgeted every month) and went on my way. I am thinking to myself, GREAT, we are really getting ahead now! Not so fast. The payment posted ONE day before the new statement came out and I didn't even realize it!! So, the next month I log on to pay and I see that magical $39.99 late fee, and my wife instantly calls me a doofus for letting that happen. I told her to just wait a minute, because I know it was paid, and I have PROOF!!! So, we went back and looked to find the error. Well, much to my dismay, there were 2 payments posted for one billing cycle and none for the next!!!! As alluded to earlier, one was on the first day of the cycle, and one was on the last day of the cycle. I was irate, I got penalized because I payed to early, how can this be?!?! Well, it can be alright, and it was. I spoke to 3 different people, explained the situation, and just like everyone else, they basically told me to tell my story walking!! I never payed much attention to the statement cycle dates before, but I know everyone of mine by heart now!

I did the same thing and they waived my late fee. I'm really surprised they didn't wave it for you. They were actually very nice about it.

nowellsl,

That is awesome! They just told me to take a hike, and then my wife called and they told her the same! I have no idea why they were so mean to us on top of not waiving the fee. We were actually very surprised as well. I even explained the situation very slowly, asked them if they understood what I was trying to say, they confirmed that they understood what had happened and still said too bad so sad!

This is unfortunate, but really common. Every bank I have ever seen has a sign about what time of a day a deposit has to made by in order to be counted for that day, and every one of my online credit card payment pages has the same warning. I think it's silly, but it's pretty plainly posted. To avoid this, I schedule my online payment as soon as I get a bill for the day before the due date. Then if I don't get an email confirmation, I double check on the due date.

At least Chase is 4pm, my Citibank card used to be 1pm on the due date!

I usually schedule my payments online through my bank and have the payment to arrive the day before the due date.

I messed up for the first time ever this month. I missed a due date.

I called because ALL of our accounts are with Chase. All our credit, our mortgage, our bank accounts, etc.

He said there are absolutely no late-fee waivers anymore and refused to transfer me to a supervisor because the call was recorded and that he wasn't allowed to transfer calls anymore over late-fees.

The angry part of me wanted to close the card, but it's our only Mastercard. Which is the only credit card you can use at Sams Club.
So I kept it open, accepted my mistake and will now make sure I login to look at our accounts weekly! :headache:

Sam's Club also takes Discover card. Just an FYI.

Best advice is to pay the bill at least 3 days before the due date. Some of mine even charge for you to have a payment post on the same day you submit it! I have learned to just list the due date as 3 days earlier on my bill spreadsheet. Now if Walmart would stop changing my due date, I would never be late!

This is the way it is with us too and they also refused to transfer us to anyone else because there was no way the late fee would be removed.

IT is only the second time in my life I have been charged a late fee so it is not a usual thing but I could not believe how they told us all this while telling us we were "valuable customers." DH told them if we were such valuable customers could they not remove the fee since we have been with them so long, etc, etc.

At least they are sending us our $25 gas rewards card so that will help offset the fee slightly.

Sams' Club actually has it's own credit card. Comes in very handy when all I have on me is my Disney Visa when shopping there.

Just one more reason to not use the credit cards, and pay cash. I honestly think that the money I've overspent on credit cards trying to earn points is so gargantuan compared to the value of what I've earned for rewards. I've realized I'm much better off sticking to a cash plan. I still have my cards, and I'll definitely keep the Disney card for the opportunity to book travel deals a few days ahead of the public, but I'm trying hard NOT to use them.
