Chase Does it Again! Budget Busting Late Fee!

I always pay my cc's at least 4 to 5 days before the due date because sometimes it takes a couple days for the money to go from the bank to the cc company. You'd think paying it online would be instant but it's not....at least not with my bank.

I pay my CC bill the same day I get my last paycheck of the month. My due date is the 1st of each month, so for example, I paid my Chase balance due Sep. 1 on Aug. 21, which was the last day we got paid in August. For the bill due Oct. 1, I paid it Sep. 18, my last pay day of September. This way it's always at least a week early, if not more. I have to go online to my bank to make sure our paychecks deposited okay anyway, so it only takes an extra 30 senconds to set the payment up.

That said, if your pay is erratic or if for some other reason you have to wait until just before it's due, you can set up an automatic payment with most CC's (and I know Chase offers this for a fact) so that you either pay a set amount, the minimum due, or the balance in full each month on the same day. You can set up the same day each month or just the due date. It's all automatic, so you never have to worry about forgeting. And if you select the due date, if the due date changes, so does your automatic payment! No more missing payments because you didn't notice the due date changed!

It's a shame they won't waive late fees though, especially when it's only 1 day (or less, in the OP's case, it was only a few hours!). A week late, sure I can see telling you "too bad" but not for a day or less!

It is best not to wait until the end. I do kind of like you. I get paid weekly and I collect all the bills for the week and are are paid on Sunday online.

I prefer to initiate all payments, but the one time my I noticed that the Chase card was due the day I opened it after being away for over a week, I just called them and paid the $15 fee to have them initiate the payment and prevent my payment from being late. Now I just send a electronic payment before going away for a week or more.

This payment style does tend to work best when you are paying your bills with a previous paycheck and not this current one.

Yeah, I don't get the not waiving the late fees for a few hours like that, or within the 24 hours. Like I said, the customer service person told me that there is a 24 hr grace period and they definitely wouldn't charge a late fee then. And, I had this happen more than several times. I hate paying too early, like to wait to the end, but I really need to think of the end as a day sooner at least in case my luck runs out, or at least change to set up payment on date due automatically. I even just went back and checked statements for this past year and no late fee charged. :confused3

I don't get the difference for some customers. Could it be how long you've had a chase card? I've had my original chase card since 1990, though I rarely use it now but for two small automatic charges I just haven't changed, and I always use my Disney visa instead.

OP thanks for you thread. I have been getting lax paying our chase statement. I now pay chase from the chase online site , I THINK when I looked at it, the site states it even accepts payments made that day for that day and it accepts holiday and weekend payments. Lately I picked paying them 1 day before they are due. I just went and looked at our bills and I paid all of them 1 day before due date. I will now go back to 3 days prior, thank you. I would be very mad at myself for paying a $39.00 late fee.

Once from DH bank website I paid a bill 2 days before it was due, but it paid it 4 days late due to after 4pm then weekend and then holiday, I was not happy, the bank put back the fees into DH account and they stated one time late payment doesn't show up on your credit score ------hmmmmm I'm not sure about that.

I think some of this may change with the new federal law and regulations. I received a letter from Discover stating that they are making changes to the account in response to these that impact all credit card companies. One change was Mailed payments received at the processing facility are credited on the same day if received by 5pm local time, instead of current 1pm. It also states that there will no longer be a pay-by-phone fee. Also high APR balances are to be paid off first. Don't know if all are due to new laws and regs but this is some of what they are doing.

The way I understand it is that only payments over 30 days late are reported to the credit bureaus...

Same thing happened to me but with Capital One! (aka Crap One! LOL). No where on my bill does it say a due date time, just a due DATE. This card is pretty much maxed out so when they tacked on the late fee that made me go over the limit and then they tacked on an over the limit fee, so that was $80 in FEES!

I called, told them there is NO time on the statement and they agreed to waive both charges.

I think it's total crap that they pull this "time" stuff. If there is a time stipulation it should be clearly written write next to the date.

Omg, yes! That's what I wanted to say but somehow I couldn't word it right, lol. If it has to be in at a certain time that should be stated very clearly alongside the due date, as well as what time zone is being used. So, if the time is 4pm EST, then that should be clearly printed with the date due, so we'd know that in Illinois it's 3 pm or California it's 2 pm, for example. I thought chase said they used the est time zone. I can only imagine the amount of money they make on people who pay late by paying on the due date, but after the exact time on the clock that they've imposed. Many people may not even notice and they probably bank on them overlooking the late fee, while they thought they were on time. By the time they notice on the bill it's way too late, if they even notice, or they might figure they were just wrong, w.e. Seems a very sneaky and, really, a dishonest way to make themselves some money! The cc company can claim it's in the very small print and you just know that many people do not take time to read the all of the very small print! If they really wanted to be on the up and up, the due date and time would be clearly, boldly noted, along with any special things (such as I posted above that Macy's did with their card not registering payments for 2(48 hrs) days after payment.

Again, I've been told that I have a 24 hr grace period with that due date on my chase cards, has no one else experienced this?

I don't have a Chase card, but I work for BOA. We take CC in the banking centers, and up until closing counts as current day. Chase may do the same ??

My biggest problem with all of this is the refusal to transfer customers to a supervisor. I would NOT stand for that. I would be writing letters up the chain.

Just one more reason to not use the credit cards, and pay cash. I honestly think that the money I've overspent on credit cards trying to earn points is so gargantuan compared to the value of what I've earned for rewards. I've realized I'm much better off sticking to a cash plan. I still have my cards, and I'll definitely keep the Disney card for the opportunity to book travel deals a few days ahead of the public, but I'm trying hard NOT to use them.

Not for everyone.

This is the first fee of any sort I've EVER paid on a credit card.

I'll pay the $39 late fee for my screw up.... I'd rather have the $1k+ in rewards we've earned this year with our credit cards. :thumbsup2
(Tuition, HVAC and all my medical bills really added up! :rotfl:)

I never payed much attention to the statement cycle dates before, but I know everyone of mine by heart now!

Don't just memorize those statement dates. I have had several instances where the billing date & due date suddenly changed (due earlier, of course) without warning.

Those CC have so many tricks!

No offense, but I've asked to speak to a supervisor twice with BOA and been refused, so it isn't just Chase.

I feel your pain, but I don't feel sorry for you.....;) I've done it myself once or twice, and we ALL know the payment page has a 'pay by' time on it,my card is 5 p.m. the day it's due. That's policy, and you were late. I hate the fees as much as anyone, but when I forget,it's my own fault, and I pay the 'stupid tax' for that day.

Just and FYI,
In my note from Discover it also says that there will no longer be an over limit fee, effective February 1, 2009 so it must have to do with the law/regulations.

Please don't make assumptions - our statement DOES NOT have a time on it. IF it did, I would not be so outraged because then it would have been obvious our payment was late. So, that's not Chase's policy and so there was no reason to believe we were late.

I also do not agree - we get 5% back on every gas purchase so we have gotten way more than 39.99 worth of gas rewards cards so I guess in the end we still made out ahead. If I pay cash I do not get 5% back on every gas purchase yet I still need gas. We pay it off each month and have never carry a balance on any card we have.

I agree! We paid for most of our hotel and park tickets with our Disney Visa reward. (this was not the card that DH cancelled)

Maybe no supervisor was available? I'm always amazed at my place of employment by the people who assume that a supervisor is apparently hovering at my desk. They have meetings or go to lunch or just plain vanish and the callers always blame the person on the phone.

OP, check your statement carefully or the original documentation you received. I bet that somewhere is the policy about the cutoff time for payment.
