My husband and I are considering going to either city for 3-5 days including flights while our kids are at sleepaway camp. How long depends on how many days he can get away from work. We love history, culture, and trying restaurants and food we can't eat at home. We aren't foodies but are pretty close. I majored in history and my husband loves to read about history. We like to do and see things we can't do at home. I don't know much about either so I'd love to hear y'alls thoughts.

Savannah all the way, but I'm a Georgia girl so might be biased. I love the city, it is easy to walk, any kind of food you want, great squares and much to explore. Easy drive to a couple of forts as well.

We like both too! Charleston, however, for us seems to have more to see and do. Cannot wrong with either. Both are charming small southern cities.

Both are great. My choice would be Charleston though. There seems to be more to do there in my opinion. Whichever you choose though I would recommend eating at Husk. They are in both Savannah and Charleston.

We've done both. Charleston was one and done. Well, actually twice. But we've been back to Savannah many times. Love that city

So funny, I really thought everyone would have said Charleston! I haven't been to Savannah in many years so that is probably why Charleston is more fresh in my mind. If you do go to Charleston, the French Quarter Inn is absolutely fabulous. We've stayed many times and love it - champagne at check-in, wine and cheese in the evening, room service brings continental breakfast, impeccable service. Just really great.

I’ve only been to Savannah, not Charleston. I enjoyed my visit there. You have beaches a short drive from the city. There’s also the cemetery and wormsloe. If you find you still have time, an hour or so south are st. Simon and Jekyll islands.

Charleston has Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, the Charles Pinckney NHS, and Patriots Point. Plus downtown. You could also do a day trips to Beaufort, Myrtle Beach, or Congaree NP.

Savannah’s got Fort Pulaski and Tybee Island and Wormsloe State HS. You could do a day trip to Fort Frederica or even down to Cumberland Island NS. Or up to Beaufort since it’s about half way between Charleston and Savannah.

We had the same question and it ended up that we visited Charleston last year. We had a wonderful time. DH and I took a walking tour of downtown that unfortunately ended up during a downpour, but it was still fantastic. Luckily we had a great group who kept a really positive attitude despite the weather. We also stayed at an air bnb that was in the perfect location. I'm happy to look up more details about either the tour or the airbnb if you are interested. We also went to Folly Beach which was great and really enjoyed Mt. Pleasant as well. Red's was a fun, cheaper place for dinner. Lots to do and see and everything was pretty close by.

What a great recommendation. We will look into it the next time we visit. Thank you!

This is rather timely. DH and I are actually going to that area this fall. We love St Augustine but after you have been there a few times there maybe isn't enough to keep you busy for a whole week so we figured we would split it up this time and do 4 days in St. Augustine and 4 days somewhere else in the area. We debated Savannah or Charleston and landed on Savannah this time. I am SO excited.

Savanna has a fantastic ghost tour if you are into that. I would say my second favorite after Boston. We went in the founders of the girls scouts house and we went in a second house and a graveyard. Lots of great history.
