Charging to Room

When you use your room key as a charge card, does the resort charge the credit card on file on a daily basis, as each individual charge is made or all at once at the end of the trip?

Also, do they put a monetary hold on your credit card when you check in? If so, how much?

We used our room card to charge against in May.

There was a $500.00 cap on it, so once it hit $500.00 my DH had to go to the front desk and review the transactions. I think that's when they processed it. Once this was done, we were able to charge against the room again.

So did the resort set the limit or did you? Once you hit your limit, your credit card was charged at that time, then again at the end of trip for what ever was remaining? Was there a $500 hold on your credit card?

I think it's an automatic 500.00 for values, 1000.00 for moderates and 1500.00 for deluxes.

They aren't really charging your card, but putting a hold on that much of your limit - making sure your card is good.

Then at checkout they charge the exact amount you spent.

Yes and you can pay on it as well if you want .

We use our rewards card to pay it down . I have also paid cash to get it down also.

Some resorts won't charge your card right away if you hit the limit so you might be denied if over the limit so sorta keep track and go to the front desk and have them run it through if needed.

In my experience they never put a hold on my card. They just charged my card when I checked out or hit the preset spending amount ($500 values, $1000 mods, $1500 deluxe).

Called the resort directly and asked about this. She said that since my trip is a pre-paid package (room, passes, dining, etc.), that it is optional to give a credit card at check-in. If I want to charge back to the room, then they would take the credit card, if I don't then not a problem. I also asked if they put a $1,000 hold on your credit card (I'm staying at a moderate) and she since my package is already paid in full, then there would be no hold on my credit card.

The limits being talked about ($500 for values, $1K for mods, $1.5K for deluxes) are not automatic limits, they are UPPER limits. You can set your room charge at any amount up to or equal to the limit for your level of resort.

When I stayed at CBR last year, I could have had a $1K limit but I requested my room charge set at $500. Tomorrow, I'll be checking into POFQ, another mod, and setting my limit around $750 or $800 or so.

And by the way, you don't need a credit card to set up a room charge. Debit card, cash, Disney Dollars, they all work for setting up a room charge.

And if you're using ANY type of card, WDW absolutely, definitely just puts it through as one big charge once you reach your limit or check out, whichever comes first. For me, it was great to have one $500 charge on my bank statement rather than 47 individual little charges. Each time you make a room charge purchase you will get a receipt. You can go to your resort's Guest Services Desk and get an up-to-the-minute printout of your itemized room charge activity at any time.

When I met my limit last year, my room charge was declined. I've read that others had the experience that the computer must have automatically opened up a second room charge because they went over their limit but were never declined. Tomorrow, I'll request at POFQ that my room charge NOT be automatically renewed, that my card be declined instead. It's my daffy little way of controlling my spending.

Last year, with my wife and our 5 year old and 2.5 year old (at the time), it took us from Sunday afternoon until Friday afternoon to reach the $500 mark. We ate mostly counter-service, plus had already pre-paid for one dinner (Hoop). Plus we had about $200 in Disney Dollars for the kids.

At WDW, there is no hold on your CC if using the Room charge feature. I have checked my online bank account after checking in and never have seen a hold showing under pending holds. This is so unlike DL because they put a hold on my CC for every little charge we made. Our CC was lost and went to use our room charge forgetting that it was linked to this particular CC and we were declined. I had to set up a room charge with a different CC.

I know some people like to know this about WDW because they are waiting on funds from a soon to be direct deposited paycheck( to use their debit card) while they are at WDW. I know we did this once, when my DH deposit was delayed prior to our departure.

1) Correct.
2) Some think there is a hold or reserve, but it is not done.
3) The computer just verifies and active CC or Debit Card account.
4) Overnight processing frequently has trouble collecting the money
. . . many times there isn't enough CC limit at check-out
. . . the guest is left a voice message to come to Front Desk to pay the balance

Thanks for this info - it's always good to get information directly from the source along with other people's experiences.

I was at Dinsey World in Sept. and we did quite a bit of shopping. :smooth:

I was at the Art of Disney Store at Epcot trying to make a purchase and was told I had reached the pre-set credit limit. ($1,000 because we were at Coronado Springs.) All they had to do was call the resort front desk and let me speak to them. I just verbally told them to go ahead and charge that amount and re-set it. It was not a problem at all. I was all set for more shopping in less than 5 minutes!

And, as others have verified, there is no hold on the card. They do run it to make sure it is an active, valid card - but they don't do any holds. Then just charge it all through in one lump sum either when you reach your set limit or when you check out.

We LOVE the room charge system. It makes it all so simple and easy!

Does anyone know if you can up these limits at check-in? We're going back
in March, staying @Pop. I know I'll hit $500 3 or 4 days into the trip. I've had to call the resort from MGM to run it through before, and while it's really easy, I'd like to prevent having to do it on the front end. Thanks for any replies.

While they don't up the limit, you can request it be processed at any point - maybe every other morning in your case. (A call from your room will usually do it.)
