Charging to room...still available?

It has been awhile since our last trip, or at least the last trip we stayed onsite. It used to be if you "tied" a credit card to the room you were able to use your room key on virtually everything. Now I understand they also tie your tickets to your room key? Can you still use your room key for purchases then? If so do I just notify them at the front desk upon check in? When I check out do all the purchases then have to be paid on the credit card or can I use cash, disney dollars, travellers checks to pay them? Any help would be so appreciated...I do not like not knowing and I really hate looking like a fool at the front desk! Do they automatically offer you this option or must you ask? Please help...we leave in 8 days and I feel a little lost here!

when we checked in on jan 10th they asked us if we wanted to do this, if we had decided to the on your card (i think they call iot the keys to the kingdom)

* all your MYW ticket info
* your DDP information
* charging ability to your room/ credit card

Thank you so much! It sounds like things are pretty much the same except for the addition of DDP and the ticket info! Now I just need to find out about alternate forms of payment! Thanks again!

i think you do need to have cc on file but you can pay however you want when you check out

If you leave a credit card on file for 'charging to your room' purposes, you can also use express check out. I believe they called it express check out. Basically, what it is, is that the night before you check out, the hotel leaves a bill on your door for your review. If you agree with the bill, you do not need to go to the front desk to check out. After your check out time, Disney will automatically charge the credit card you left on file for the price of your bill. If you want to pay by another means, then you can stop by the front desk and settle your bill however else you want to pay.
Something to keep in mind (at least for us) was we did not want our kids cards to have room charging capabilities. Not because we did not trust them, but I was concerned about the kids possibly losing their cards and being found by someone who might try to use it to charge. Just something to think about if you have kids. But some people like for their kids to be able to charge so that they can get food or snacks if they are out on their own. You just need to decide for yourself which is the better choice for kids. Good Luck and Have a wonderful and safe trip.

Exactly. To add some additional info:

You can use a credit card, debit card (with VISA/MC logo), cash, travelers checks or Disney Dollars to "back up" your room charge. If you use a credit or debit card, they will run the card to make sure the account is open and valid, but they will NOT put a hold on the amount. If backing it up with cash/trav. checks/DDs they will need you to fork them over.

The upper limit of room charge amount depends on the level of resort you're staying at: in a Value resort, the maximum room charge amount is $500; for Moderates, $1K; for Deluxes, $1.5K. You don't have to set it up for the maximum allowable, you can set it up for less. When you check in at your resort, you will be asked if you want to set up a room charge.

If you reach your room charge limit, your credit/debit card will automatically be charged that amount. You can then set up another room charge, but it will not happen automatically. Let's say you set up a $1000 limit. You were at $996 and just tried to charge $10 at a shop. Your purchase will be declined. At that moment, you can call your resort's front desk and verbally authorize your room charge to be charged onto your credit/debit card on-file, and then set up a new one in whatever amount you want (subject to the maximum limits). They set up this "renewal" system (my word for it, not Disney's), and it is very convenient, especially since everyone and their cat seems to have a cellphone these days.

just wondering....did they change the limits? I know that when we stayed at a value, they asked us if we wanted charging priv. and told us we could select any amount up to a $1,000. We chose less because we had already paid for pretty much everything and just felt like it would encourage us to overspend on extras w/o really thinking about it. But I do specifically remember them saying $1,000 b/c I just kept thinking...Wow...we don't need to spend that much more. Just wondering....

I've never stayed at a Value, so I don't have first-hand knowledge, but I've always seen it reported with 100% consistency. When did you stay? Which Value? I'm always interested in getting updated info so I don't give out "old" information, KWIM?

ALMo was $500 limit when we were there in Spetember. I know this becasue we were at DTD buying gifts to take home, and it said I was over our limit. I ofcourse did not have my purse, just my KEy to the Kingdom card, so I had to call my husband (wandering hte store witht he kiddos) to come and pay with his cc. He was like "How much did you spend?" Next time I will pay it off half way through (We had cash- it was just in the safe at the hotel!)

The same thing happened to us in Sept. We were staying at POP and were at Epcot without DH. We reached the limit ($500) and only had limited cash on hand. We had to place items back(didnt have credit cards with me either). It was stuff we didn't need. When we went back to the room we corrected the problem and we were on our way again the next morning with more charging
limits. I am still wondering if that is a good thing
