Charging on Room Key

Which would you rather lose: your room key with charging priviledges or your credit card? Either can be used without proof of identity! They both have just a signature match (if even that is checked). However, a lost credit card could be used for internet or phone ordering of goods while a lost room key is rather limited in the places it can be used. If I were to lose my room key, I'd notify the front desk and get a new key card. If I were to lose my credit card, I'd have to notify the credit card company. I think it'd be much easier to take care of a lost room key situation than a lost credit card situation. In fact, I consider the more limited potential for abuse of a room key to be a feature, not a bug.

That echos my thoughts, as well.

There have been times where I've been asked for id when paying with my room key, although none were at restaurants just merchandise.

ITA! We always use room charging, we love it.
We also do as others have stated and only get charging priviledges on our room keys while our guest's cards are not valid for charging.
BTW, we did have the experiences of both losing a room key with charging priviledges and of having a beach bag stolen at Typhoon Lagoon with a credit card in it. From direct experience I can vouch for the fact that it was much easier, faster and had a lot less of a potentially disasterous effect with having a room key lost and canceling it;, then it was with a credit card stolen that had a much higher credit limit than any room card would have, and a lot more chances of possible stolen idenity etc! For us, the room charging cards are one of our favorite and most used amenities.
BTW, I could be wrong about this, because we always charge everything on a room card, so consequently always leave a credit card on file; but I do not believe you can have express checkout if you do not leave a credit card with the front desk.

We rented points from a friend and will be staying at OKW in November. If you are just renting points can you still use your room keys to charge with? Or isn't that allowed?

f being able to use her room key for charging but I don't think I would allow my wife's brother the same freedom

You would be allowed to charge to your room key, you are the one registered to the room.

I feel more comfortable with the room key because then my actual credit card # isn't all over "the world".

After this reading this thread and some more thinking about this, I will definitely use the room key for our charging, but will not have it activated for our guests. I don't want to deal with the hassle of paying separately or having them repay us.

It does not matter if the points are rented or not, the CM checking you in won't even know. You will still be asked at check in if you wish to put a credit card down for charging priviledges. So if you want to be able to charge back to your room, you just give them your credit card. We stopped years ago bringing large sums of cash, travelers checks and credit cards to WDW. After we had our bag stolen at Typhoon Lagoon and went through the hassle of: talking to the Sheriffs dept, calling the credit card co, etc., --we now, never walk around with more than our room key w/charging priviledges, our APs and maybe $75.00 - $100.00 cash for incidentals.
We leave the money for the trip in the bank and when the bill comes, we pay it. Another thing I like is at the resort you get an itemized charge bill but on your cc bill it is several large charges rather than a zillion little charges to check over.

Thank you DebbieB and BWVDee! This is kind of new to us and I really appreciate the information.

Plus I much prefer to use the room key and we usually only bring one credit card to put the rental car on with us to WDW, as I just hate entering what seems like endless credit card slips into the computer when we get home.

Are any of the pools at OKW zero entry? I am in a wheelchair and we have a guaranteed roll-in shower room and I know very little about OKW except when I learning about here.

No zero depth entry pools at OKW, at this present time. OKW is soon to go under a major main pool rehab and maybe a zero entry pool will be added, however it will not be done in time for your trip. There are only a limited amount of zero depth entry pools at WDW's resorts. These are at AKL, Poly, SAB and SSR (once it opens). As someone staying in a DVC resort you will be able to pool hop, however the AKL & SAB are off limits, but the pool at the Poly will be available to you and also SSR pool (depending on the final verdict of whether pool hopping will be allowed here or not). If a zero depth entry pool is an important component of your vacation, you may want to see if you could switch your reservation to BCV, which would allow you access to SAB. SAB is by far, the most unique and amazing pool on WDW property. BCV will also provide more convenient and easier access to major parks, nighttime park shows, and numerous dining & shopping avenues.

Thanks for the information BWVDee! We picked OKW because my spouse really wants to be able to park right outside the door and the pool really isn't all that big of a deal to me. Plus I wouldn't feel right pool hopping because I am just renting points and it seems to me that pool hopping should be reserved for the people who actually own DVC points.

Thanks again!

Nope, as long as you are a registered guest at a DVC resort, your room key will say DVC member. Which will then entitle you to all DVC member priviledges, including pool hopping.
Personally, I think the additional convenience and much greater accessibility to major parks, nighttime park shows, dining and shopping options-- within very easy walking distance, etc.; that BCV will offer your traveling group, wil far outweigh the self parking at OKW. But that is up to you and DH, and what is the best fit for you. Have a wonderful trip!!

But let's say that a guest checks in later than you and asks the front desk for charge privileges on their key? Are you in a bind? Or does the front desk CM need the actual member's authorization to give a charge key to a non-member?
