Charge for parking

There may be an obvious answer to this question but, how does Disney know to charge me for parking or not? Last year we booked before the parking charge went into effect so we were not subject to the fee. I am doing online check in, I don't believe on our reservation it asked if we will have a car on property, and last year we didn't visit the front desk (even to checkout). We are not signed up for Magical Express but we could have been dropped off by Uber, taxi, or by an Orlando family member. I understood that our package price did not include a parking charge as the parking is charged separate. We are staying at the Pop so my only guess is they do something different at the security checkpoint before you enter the parking lots?
 
well last week you could not drive into to Comtemp' or GF front drop off or parking areas without passing thru a manned gate where they scanned our M' Band . . . and verified our reservation info even tho we were able to bypass the front desk.

We were staying at GF but attending a multiday conf at the Comtemp conf center and so parked at GF at night and at Comtemp during the day and had to scan the MB each time we entered either. BUT our conf' fee included the parking charge so no bill . . .

Yep, this. You'll go through the car "gate" and scan your band.

I think the bigger mystery to me was how they knew NOT to charge my parents because they had a handicapped placard. They went through the same gate and scanned in, but did not get charged. It could have been because on our first day (check in) we stopped at the manned gate first and they allowed us to go in and pull up to bell services. Maybe they noted it there.

I never went through a security gate and they charged me for parking last trip. I didn't have a car.

Still reports of a glitchy system. Some have a car and are never charged & others don't have a car & are charged. Should be an easy stop at front desk to clear up or call Disney main # if you don't notice it til after check out. They are familiar with the billing errors.

But that shouldn't always work either... you can have a rental car as you arrive at Disney, drop off people/luggage then return the rental... no parking fee needed.

This should be really, really simple and low tech (but probably isn't). At check in, you get asked, "are you parking a car with us?". If no, no charge. If yes, you get charged, and you get a parking pass to put in the dash of your vehicle.

At say 2am, security sweeps the parking lots looking for the passes. No passes... boot the car (don't even need to tow it). Pay at the desk and they'll get the boot removed.

I noticed on my last night and went to the front desk to get them to remove the charges. Then they still charged me parking for the last night. 🤦‍♀️ I emailed the billing department (had already left the resort at that point) and they removed that charge, too.
 
I noticed a camera to read tags at both the entrance lanes and exit lanes to GF and CONTEMP last week ....... a system could keep track of how long a vehicle stays . . .

Does that really help though? If they've stayed "too long", how do you charge them?
