My SIL just got back from the May 18th Magic 5-day cruise and told me she was upset that there was an extra charge for dessert and coffee on the Magic. I know that alcohol, specialty drinks, and some single-serve snack items cost extra but I thought everything else in the dining room was included, especially dessert. Please someone tell me she was mistaken!? I am going on the Dream in July and I want to know what I will need to budget for.

Thanks!

Perhaps she was talking about the specialty coffee in Cove Cafe?

Welcome to the DIS!!

Everything in the main dining rooms (except alcohol, specialty coffees or special order cakes) is no extra charge. Perhaps she went to Palo, which would mean an extra charge. The desserts and other goodies in Cove Cafe are also no extra charge, but you do have to pay for coffee there.

Yes, that's what I thought. She didn't go to Palo as far as I know. I told her someone probably told her wrong. This will be my first Disney cruise but I went on Royal Caribbean in 2005 and I don't remember paying for dessert in the main dining room. I knew someone on this board would tell me.

Thanks!

There is a charge for the specialty coffees in the Cove Cafe, but not for the desserts/snacks there. The ONLY desserts I've ever seen with a charge are the boxed/bagged snacks outside the theaters or from room service. Normal coffee has no charge (beverage station, dining rooms, room service, etc); only the specialty (Starbucks-like) coffees do.

Did she actually get charged for something? Or is her comment based on hearsay?

We are less than 2 weeks off the Fantasy. The only food item we were charged for was the Palo upcharge...and we had dessert every night.

Wait, isn't there a charge at one of the two ice cream places? I seem to recall seeing that one was included and the other was an extra cost. Or maybe I'm just recalling it wrong....:confused3

If you order smoothie type milk shakes, there is a charge. If you get ice cream, there is not. Smoothies, milk shakes (that they make for you), specialty coffees, alcohol, virgin specialty drinks, etc. have a charge.

To be charged extra for something she would have had to physically use her KTTW card and sign for the charge. You have to do those with specialty drinks (both in cove cafe and in the MDR where the menu has suggested alcohol drinks, smoothies, special coffee drinks- those with alcohol in them, and after dinner drinks). If she did not hand over her KTTW card and sign then she was definitely not charged.

Did she order espresso or cappuccino? You do pay for those 'coffees' in the MDR.

What she said was that they charged extra so she didn't order some items. I know she saw a movie so she was probably told that the snacks there were extra. She was definitely not charged for something that she didn't order because that does NOT happen to her !
What I should have done was direct her to this site so that she was aware of what was included and what wasn't. I've been stalking this board since March so I thought I was pretty well versed in how the cruise works :surfweb:.
I'll question her a bit more next time I see her, right now she's a little peeved with me since I'm going on the Dream and she was on Magic. She said they were docked next to it and it was huge and fabulous and her kids were upset that she didn't book the Dream for them once they saw the Aquaduck.

It sounds like she was going to find something to complain about to you to try and make you not enjoy your cruise as much. ;) Don't let her get to you.

Agreed!

And if she does keep it up, just refer her to her cruise doc's to read (ok the horse has already bolted after the stable door is closed) but..... ;)

Is she pulling your leg? Or, is she a nutty person, or someone that likes to complain about anything or everything?

I know the Cove Cafe has the sweets in the display case that are free of charge, but the coffee drinks there are an upcharge. If she went there for coffee and "dessert", she'd only get charged for the coffee drink.

Other people also mentioned the specialty coffee drinks in the main dining room and smoothies, which are also extra charge. But for the most part most non-alcoholic beverages available as standard "refillable" options are free of charge.

GULP!

No need to GULP Ex Techie, I'm not offended! :)
My cruise docs haven't come yet but once they do I'm gonna read it cover to cover.

MND, I wouldn't say she's a complainer of that type but if she was sufficiently annoyed about something she would not seek clarification for fear she'd start a fight if the answer wasn't something she expected, you know? She doesn't drive because she says she has road rage and would probably kill someone! She did say the food left her a bit flat except for dinner in the MDRs. Even so, she said she'd go again.

Now since I'm a planner and I had never seen a reference to paying for dessert on ANY of the sites I stalked I thought maybe that Magic charged but Dream didn't. I can't tell you how many questions I had for her when she got back and she looked at me like "how do you know about this stuff?". I don't spend $5000 and not know what I'm getting.

For example, our trip is in July and once I booked in March I started stalking sites and saw how little girls dress as princesses at dinner so I got my 4 year old DD a new Tiana costume and accessories to match it and her old Belle costume (Disney store sale). My SIL knew this, I even told her other SIL so that they wouldn't be surprised but they still ended up needing to buy one on the ship for double what I paid since they didn't pack one for their DDs. That stung her since she doesn't like to spend money on that type of stuff but she didn't want to see her DD unhappy.

DH knows he'll be in the Cove Cafe buying coffee anyway because we think we've become coffee connoisseurs since we bought our Keurig:coffee:.
