Hello,
I read that using a Disney hotel phone to call home to Canada is very expensive. If we receive a call TO the Disney hotel room phone FROM Canada, though, would there be a charge to us?
Thanks!!

No--there is no charge for 'incomings'.
You can use your calling card to call Canada but I usually use the Lobby phones as from the room they still add a charge to even use that?!:confused3

Get a calling card from Loblaws (or somewhere like that).
the $10 PC Calling card is more than sufficient(it expires 6 months from the activation date).Use the lobby phones (as suggested by minnie56)

I think there's some surcharge to make a call from your hotel room. Then the phone company charges an outrageous LD rate. You're better off getting a calling card or adding on a LD plan to your cell phone before you leave :)

Just back from WDW. There is no charge for a 1-800 call made from your room. You have to read the card by the phone to find out how to make a 1-800 call. I think you dial '8' first, then the 1-800 number. I have a Bell calling card attached to my home phone. I call 1-800-555-1111, a recording welcomes me to Bell Canada, I am prompted for my calling card number (which is my home phone number) and my pin number, I am then asked for the number I wish to call. The call is billed at Bell Canada rates. Last year I used this method at the pay phones in the lobby but this year my husband read the phone information in the room and saw that there wasn't a charge for 1-800 calls so we made several call from our room to Canada. I checked our WDW printout of room charges and the phone calls did not appear on it.

That's what we always do. Not calling that 1-800 number makes a huge difference on your phone bill, even with your calling card, once you get home. My father forgot to do that once last year when he was calling me to say their flight was delayed. When he got his next phone bill he was shocked to see how much that 30 second call cost him. I can't remember the exact cost but it was enough to make his hair stand on end!

I'm not sure about Disney hotels but most of the ones I've stayed in charged for local calls but not for the 1-800 ones.

Thanks everyone!! Just to clarify, I have a 7-11 calling card with a 1-800 number to use when making a call from the States, and then we enter our PIN number and then the number we wish to call - so I should be able to use this from our hotel room phone without a charge? That would be great.

As far as cell phones go, I understood from a Telus rep. that if my teenaged daughter and I both have unlimited text messaging on our cell phones, there will be no charge for us to communicate that way while at WDW. Does that sound right to you? There would be a charge probably, though, to text message from Florida to a Canadian cell phone?

Thanks again!

That's right, I bought a calling card from the disney lobby and it was an 800 number to call and there was no charge at all to the room. This was expensive for time used on the card for the 10.00 value but cheaper than calling direct from the room.

The text message I did to I think it was just a regular charge, I can't remember though. It couldn't have been to high though or I would remember. My friend and I texted each other while at the parks, and I also text my friends back in Ontario.

Check with your carrier about text messaging. We are with Bell Mobility and can text anywhere in North America. My son and I were in Disneyland and since we were both doing different things it was great fun to text each other to keep in touch.

I did the same with friends at WDW last December. Also it was easy to keep in touch with people at home through text messaging.

trust me.. GET a phone card.. lol we were there at Christmas time.. thought we'd just make a quick 5 minute call to hubbys parents wishing them merry christmas. As my dad had called us. So one 6 minute call later.. 58.00 in charges
