Character Swap - Progress Thread - COMPLETE & FINISHED

But just to clarify sooo if I put a shadow mat that counts as an embellishment? so anything about 2 layers?

Yes, putting the shadow layer on will count as an embellishment since you would then have more than 2 layers.

I'm sorry things have gotten out of hand here. As Susan said, I'm fairly to new hostessing and I'm sorry if I haven't made things clear for everyone.

Here's another idea that I thought of, after talking with DR about the upcoming DL swap.

For me, I am thinking that the embellishment does not necessarily have to be attached to the piece. So, you could: cut a small Cricut icon piece, but not attach it to a title. Or, on many titles, people will put brads in the corners. So instead of putting brads in the corners, then just include 4 brads, or a yard of ribbon/fiber, or a few buttons, etc.

So as an alternative, when someone thinks all other ways of embellishing would decrease the quality of the piece. Not as a first choice of doing things.

Hope, thanks for the suggestion, but I would prefer that we not do that for this swap. There may be exceptions when putting the brads or whatever in the bag (and not attached) is the way to go, but I would prefer to discuss those cases on an individual basis.

Our next check-in date is this Friday, March 6. Everyone, please check-in by Friday and let me know your status, even if you haven't start yet! A few of you have already checked in and I've updated the first post.

My check-in for my groups is that I haven't started creating anything yet. I have ordered supplies and thought about things to do, but that's as far as I've gotten so far. I'm hoping to get started this afternoon.

I am here and only have ideas in my head.

Sorry I'm not further along with doing something. :sad1:

I had all of my supplies, but I lost something and I don't know where to look. I am usually so careful about putting stuff away, so I just have no idea and if it doesn't turn up tonight, I'll be re-ordering it.

I have lots of sketches, and I started Baloo -- it is all cut and I have started assembling it.

I am going to be doing mine next week. I want to get the flock/pp swap and the signups for my DL swap done first.

Checking in for the 3/6 check in date. I have finished 3 and working on the next. I am guessing with the snow that we are having now (12 inches right now - and still snowing) I might be able to work on a few more tomorrow.

Checking in- I have some of my files made and I have my basic ideas but I have not really started yet.

Oh, I love this idea. In the MK swap I had a few things that I really pondered with the Frontierland I did as I wanted it to be a girlie/pretty Frontierland instead of a camping Frontierland and I actually cut out pieces for a different idea and then decided it probably wouldn't qualify since it looked silly with embellishment (in my opinion). If I had been able to just throw those pieces in with more of the ribbon and brads to go with it and still had it qualify, I would have. Ya know?

And I also have to say as a newbie swapper that I find all the "double layering this," "triple layering that," "triple layering counts as an embellishment for this," uber-confusing. I think the layering requirements is where I get most confused.

Before this discussion started (which thank you Disney-rider for starting it as I obviously had questions!) I had already decided that I was going to print out the requirements & post them on my scrap table so I could just keep checking the list to make sure I was doing it perfectly. Do all of you print out the requirements for each swap?

I was so surprised at the differences between the school swap & MK swap. And since there were lots of similarities too it made it even more challenging and I didn't print out the requirements for the MK swap and I really wish I had.

Anyway, just swapping from a newbie perspective. I'm loving it & learning oodles of new stuff from all y'all. It's mostly fun with a little bit of "am I doing it right/am I good enough?" anxiety.

Yes, I usually print out the requirements.

You know, I was in the school swap and I set up the MK swap and I am surprised to hear that there were so many differences -- other than the topper/title requirements. I think part of the differences were unintentional, part of it is probably that I have been swapping long enough that I read what I expect to be there and write as if you have all read it a million times. I like to hear this kind of feedback because I really don't want you to be confused. In any swap that I host, if something seems unclear or just plain wrong, please send me a pm so I can work it out.

Surina, when do I get to meet you? Our freeways go everywhere now. It cant take that long to meet up somewhere!:hippie:

OK, I've been pondering Mittens and am wondering what everyone thinks of a title that says, "Reality Check". I'm not sure Mittens ever says this in the movie but it just seems to summarize everything she stands for. And she's such a great, sarcastic cat that I don't want it to just say Mittens. Maybe "Mittens: Reality Check"? Or maybe I could do two titles, one that says Mittens & one that says reality check?

Checking in, haven't started on these yet, just have some ideas. :)

I still print out the requirements. Even for my own swaps. The requirements used to be varied a whole lot more than they are now. Some said 1 per person, some said said 2, some said 3, the sizes were varied too, some had 2x2 or 3x3 or 3x4 for journal boxes.

The matting is confusing too. I like to think of it this way, double matted - two layers and then the item. In the photo mats, the top layer will be your own photo, for the journal boxes you need some place to write on, that is the "third" layer. Does that help with that or make it more confusing?

We [hostesses] have come together to find a way to logically and sensibly describe what embellishing is in regards to making elements. Rebecca will put together a glossary - WITH PHOTOS - to help. But with all things - we appreciate creativity above rigidness. If you have an idea that doesn't fit the "guidelines" PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE run it past the hostess. More than likely it is fine as it is or it may need a little tweaking, but we want to see it. We can't grow if we don't try.

I always print out the requirements and look back on them when I'm creating my pieces. It just makes it easier for me to make sure I'm on the right track.

I haven't seen this movie so I don't know anything about Mittens, but if the title "Reality Check" fits her then I say go for it. The title doesn't have to say the character's name. It can be a quote of theirs, or something that just fits them.

And, like has been said above, we want to see your creativity. We don't want everything to look the same. So if you have some great idea while working on this swap and create something and aren't sure whether it'll work, please run it by me. I'm happy to work with you and see all the great things everyone is making.

That was random...but I will be at the CKC-Mesa Convention all day Friday. And I'll be a teachers assitant all day Saturday.Come out!!!

checking in - i've not started yet but have supplies and ideas - will get started as soon as i finish my calendar swap elements. xx

Wow ok I didn't mean to start a firestorm.
But I can and will finish my groups I'll just make more stuff.I'm not one to give up.
I have done other swaps this year and no-one has called me out on anything so i guess I'm doing something right.
And even though I have a cricut and all but 3 of the carts I love getting cricut stuff it's less work for me.
But just to clarify sooo if I put a shadow mat that counts as an embellishment? so anything about 2 layers? Honestly I've never known that...
I've never been one to do Qoutes or songs but I have to admit the one I did for Darby was super easy.
And I know I come off brash and hard but none of it's aimed at anyone it's just me I guess. Please don't think I'm copping an attitude I just come off like that in e-mails, I type the same as I talk. So I'm sorry if I got anyone mad or ruffled feathers. I just needed the clarification. And guessing from the number of PM's I've gotten it looks like people were pretty happy that I brought it up.
At least I did one thing right (i think)
But I will be very careful in the future what I choose to do, And I hope this doesn't hurt my chances of being in other swaps in the future.

No firestorm. Just a start of a discussion that should have been taken a long time ago once the embellishing became an issue.

Here is a thread where we discuss all and everything without taking up space in an on-going swap.

Just checking in - I have all my supplies and sketches.

I will complete this swap, embellished 2 ways and following the rules, but it will likely be my last for a while. I think I need time away from swapping. Thanks.
