Character autographs on a mug?

Has anyone ever brought a mug to guest services to get signed by the characters? I am wondering if I can do that, or if they wouldn't accept it (too fragile, harder to write on??). I want to do something like this:

My only concerns would be how much more the oil-based Sharpies cost vs. regular Sharpies, and whether the characters signing will be aware that they have to use the special ones.

Also, since you can't bake it right away, I'd worry about smearing/smudging the signatures.

I was planning on buying the proper pen and bringing it along. You're right about the smudging, I'd just have to be extra careful I guess?! Haven't decided yet because I don't want to carry along a mug if they won't even do it!

I had a ceramic mickey head platter signed with regular sharpies. I can wash it. I just can't put it in the dish washer. I love this idea!

I don't really know why they wouldn't sign it. I know they've signed plates (ceramic, could break), as well as vinylmation figures (odd shaped).

Just be aware that you'll leave the mug at Guest Services and it will be delivered to your room toward the end of the cruise. Whether they will be "extra careful" about not smudging the signatures during that process, who knows?

You're right, I never really thought about them taking extra special care with it! Well, I will see if I have any room in my suitcase. I am still undecided, but I just wanted to know if it was possible. Thanks!!

I had a ceramic piggy bank signed with a Sharpie paint marker and it turned out beautifully. I took it Guest Services still packed in the box I used to isolate it in my suitcase, complete with bubble wrap. It came back the same way. I say go for it!

They make special mugs that can be signed without smudging. I know Starbucks sells some but I've seen them other places. It's like a special material similar to a chalk board.

Hey, a mug is a great idea! :thumbsup2 I was looking for a new idea for something to get signed for our upcoming cruise. There is a paint-your-own pottery place near our house so maybe I could bring a mug from there, have it signed, and then bring it back for them to glaze and bake it. Maybe you have something like that near you?

Thanks everyone, got lots of great suggestions! I will likely try it and let everyone know how it goes!

One thing to consider, if you're concerned about smudging and don't mind waiting in lines - you don't have to turn it in at guest services! The characters will sign odd-shaped items if you offer them. We actually took a t-shirt on my DD's first cruise and had characters sign it when she met them - since we were going to visit them anyway and that way we didn't have to bring an autograph book (she was 4 turning 5 and it was a happy birthday shirt).

In the end - after the autograph session in the atrium (long time ago - they don't do it anymore, but they had a bunch of characters at a long table and everyone signed something and passed it to the next person. Awesome experience - wish they still did it!) we actually did end up turning it in to guest services, but we ended up with so many signatures on it we probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise (Peter Pan, Wendy, Alice to name a few) and we got to experience one of the best character interactions ever (long story - but Peter Pan informed Alice that my DH thought she was weird. Never seen him so flustered and defensive to a Disney character before or since! Hillarious!)

That is a good idea too! I've decided I'm going to try the mug thing. I bought a $3 plain mug at Target and a Sharpie paint pen tonight, so I will bring them and give it a whirl. If it doesn't turn out well, I'm only out like $10 - yes, the pen was $6.99!

Do they still sell blank mickey vinylmations??? That would be cute for my older kid

From experience, what is the best item for a child? We were thinking t-shirts or sweatshirts because they can wear them but then the pillowcase is a great idea too!

As a former Mouse, I can tell you they will sign it. But your best bet is to hold it for them while they do so.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight! I think I am going to take my chances and bring it to guest services. If whoever signs it behind the scenes smudges it or messes it up, it's not really a big deal. I probably won't wait in too many character lines and I'd rather just hand it off and get it back and the end of the cruise, seems like the easiest way!
