A bit of a different thought here...

My lips were constantly getting chapped, even though I was using lip balm. I kept trying different kinds and still had chapped lips. I started reading ingredients and found that they all had lanolin in them - which is supposed to be great for your skin, unless you are allergic to it, which I am. :rolleyes1

Now I either use vaseline or a lip balm I found at Whole Foods that doesn't have lanolin in it. I very rarely get chapped lips now (pretty much only happens when I have a cold and am breathing through my mouth).

so the lanolin was making your lips more chapped? Or...? How did you find out you were allergic to lanolin?

I use MAC cosmetics lip treatment - the one without the suncscreen, a bit spendy but the wonder ointment IMO

Yup, the lanolin was making my lips more chapped.

I figured out the allergy one spring when I was dealing with seasonal allergies and my nose and lips were completely chapped. I put some A&D ointment (contains lanolin) on my nose and within seconds, it was fluorescent red and burned like crazy. Didn't think about the lip stuff, but kept having cracked corners of my mouth and finally put 2 and 2 together. Most lipsticks and lip balms contain lanolin. In retrospect, I realized that every time I wore lipstick, my lips ended up chapped. I also realized that my legs were always VERY dry after shaving - and almost all shaving creams contain lanolin.

I should probably also mention, I've never been able to wear wool anything, so I probably should have made the connection sooner. Plus I seem to be getting more allergic to more things as I get older. :sad2:

Vaseline. It's CHEAP and it works! PLUS, it is multi-functional.

Chicken Poop user here! I buy mine at tractor supply and it works great. And there is no actual *poop*,Just natural oils and what not. It's great for everyday lip moisturizing. However, for severely chapped lips I recommend Aquaphor, that stuff is AMAZING! My dermatologist actually recommended it to me when I was taking medicine that dried my lips out to the point where they were bleeding. A little goes a long way and one of those little tubes last forever. Hope this helps, I know how uncomfortable it can be!

Vaseline. :)

Just plain old vaseline on before bed is great, I have been using it for years I put it all over my lips and around them. I make my kids do this too in the winter when I notice they start getting chapped too.

I have dry lips all the time from a medical condition. Vaseline works the best. They sell it in tubes. I coat it on heavily at night and use it throughout the day. I can't use anything other than Vaseline or Carmex due to sunscreens in lip balm. Those make my lips swell as if I had botox. blech

Another recommendation for Vaseline. My lips are constantly chapped too and vaseline is the only thing that doesn't make them worse.
I diagnosed myself with a Lanolin allergy after reading in a magazine that if your lips seem more chapped after you put on chap stick, you might be allergic.

My lips are falling off!!

I swear, I've tried carmex, blistex, burt's bees, etc etc ETC!!!! They stay chapped as cowboy's rear end!

Is there some home remedy I can try?? (something that won't burn/sting is preferable)

I know that so many DISers are a wealth of information--and not just about Disney! Help!

Try Aquaphor

I vote for Vaseline as well. It does wonders. I even put a thin layer on my DD's cheeks/nose before she heads out to play in the snow.

Olive oil. Rub just a little bit on your lips before bed and in the morning they will be much better. It also works great for very dry skin patches that lotion doesn't seem to help.

I didn't read all of the posts so I don't know if this was mentioned already, but I still buy Lansinoh or PureLan (used for breastfeeding) to use on my lips. NOTHING has ever helped my lips like those items.

I will use the Neosporin lip stuff when my lips are very severely chapped (it improves them practically overnight!). Things like chapstick and petroleum jelly will *not* heal your lips. It will coat them, but the skin will not absorb the ingredients and therefore, they are not all that helpful to actually improving the skin.

Well it has always healed mine, even if it is just by default of keeping the dry air off of them, and usually works in just one or two nights.

This is my favorite ! For me it's a local product they sell it at the local Farmer's market and the owner Heather has had a booth at the Food & Wine Festival the last two years, which ironically is where I met her we live in neighboring towns in GA and met in FL. Anyway I looked it up to make sure there was no lanolin and there is not my favorite is the Honey stic, it's so soft and not waxy like some lip balm caaan be.
Over the years I have also used Aquaphor when my lips or nose were badly chapped from having a cold.
