In an article this week, Variety magazine reports on an internal memo that Chapek sent to staff laying out his goals for 2022, as WDC prepares to enter its second century:

Disney Goals 2022 Revealed by CEO Bob Chapek - Variety

A sentence from the article: "Chapek, who took over for longtime CEO Bob Iger as head of the Walt Disney Company in February 2020, laid out three specific 'pillars' as his goals for 2022: 'storytelling excellence,' 'innovation' and 'relentless focus on our audience.'

While ESPN got a specific call-out, the only parks mention is this: "We bring people together and make magical memories that last a lifetime at our parks and on our cruise ships."

As for Chapek's "relentless focus on our audience," I already feel "relentlessly focused on," but probably not how he thinks.

I read the memo and the press surrounding it. Not sure what, if anything, to make of it.

I think comments on quarterly financial calls are more illuminating.

Chapek...

I can't think of the last time I wanted to see a CEO step down or be ousted more than this guy.

This is funny. The discontinuation of magical express, Lightning Lane replacing fast pass, annual pass alteration, extra magic hours, higher than normal price increases… it’s all what the audience wanted.
its what the audieance that they want, wants.....they're telling us they're only going after a certain group of people for the parks now. Unless you're in that group, they dont care what we think.

I came across an article by Variety (12/21/21) about Disney CFO Christine M. McCarthy lands contract extension thru June 2024. In the article she is quoted as saying, " It is an incredible privilege to serve as CFO of this great company, and I am thankful for the opportunity to continue working with Bob Chapek and the entire senior management team as we advance the Company's strategic initiatives with an eye toward delivering shareholder value." I'm not surprised by the memo.

I take this as a call to start petitions. That way he knows what his audience wants.

The only thing that would work is for people to stop going. But even some of the most vocal still have trips booked. And until the parks become empty WDW and Chapek could care less. I don't blame them either, if people are willing to pay more for less...

I do not have a big problem with Bob Chapek but a lot of people seem to dislike him. I hope he is able to do great things, turn the public perception of him around and establish his legacy.

My wife shared this with me this morning. I thought it was relevant and kind of matches some of our frustrations.

Just the opposite of a link shared on another thread, that pointed out maximum attendees to the parks regardless of the increase in costs. Guessing both are correct, each in their own way... General public is still flooding the parks, however anyone who has experience is pushing back on increased costs. Wonder which group wins in the long term? Can Chapek / Amato find the right balance for long term success?

They are both correct. IMO the parks are packed due to many still making up cancelled trips. I think the upset people will win in the long term.

Wishful thinking.

You consistently buy into the exception and not the rule.

I don't know if the upset people will "win". But it is absolutely true that the travel industry is still working through pent-up demand and make-up trips, and Disney certainly is benefiting from that.
