A 15-minute drive south of San Miguel, Chankanaab (the name means "small sea") is a national park with a lovely saltwater lagoon, an archaeological park, a botanical garden, a dolphin aquarium, and a wildlife sanctuary. Chankanaab has remained in its natural state for decades; the few developments haven't destroyed its natural beauty.
Scattered throughout the archaeological park are 60 reproductions of Olmec, Toltec, Aztec, and Maya stone carvings from well-known sites in Mexico. Guides lead interesting, informative tours, explaining the history of the most significant pieces. Also on-site is a good example of a typical Maya house. The botanical garden has more than 450 species of regional plants. Enjoy a cool walk to the lagoon, where 60-odd species of marine life, including fish, coral, turtles, and various crustaceans, live.
Swimming isn't allowed in the lagoon; the area's ecosystem has become fragile since the collapse of underwater tunnels linking the lagoon to the sea. But you can swim and rent equipment to go scuba diving or snorkeling at the beach. There's plenty to see under the sea: a sunken ship, crusty old cannons and anchors, a Maya Chacmool (the revered rain god), and a beautiful sculpture of the Virgin del Mar (Virgin of the Sea). In addition, brilliant fish swim around the coral reef. (Note that it's forbidden to feed the fish or touch the coral.)
A small museum near the beach has photographs illustrating the park's history as well as coral and shell exhibits and some sculptures. You can also watch sea lions perform at one of the daily shows (for an additional fee). Come early, as the park fills up fast, particularly on the days when cruise ships dock. COST: $10. Daily 7-6.
