We want to book a WDW vacation package sometime for Nov or early Dec 2011 but I don't want to get locked into a date and not be able to take advantage of a discount when they are announced if we miss it by a week or something. If we book after the holidays (so that we can start making payments) can we call and change the dates later? Or if there aren't any discounts available when we go would we be able to change the reservation from a moderate resort to a value after booking? Are there any fees for changing things around like that?

As long as you make changes at least 45 days prior to your arrival date you can do anything you want (change dates, change level of resort, change DDP and tickets, etc). If you make changes to a pkg closer than 45 days prior to your arrival, Disney can charge a change fee (although they usually waive this, if the price of your pkg goes up and not down). If you make changes within 10 days of arrival they charge an administrative fee. I think it's like $10.00, but not sure about that one.

My trip for Dec I booked last Dec and have made changes to it several times (moved the date up a week, switched from a bounceback deal to an AP discount, and switched from 8 nights at CSR to a split stay at CSR and YC). All changes were made prior to 45 days out, so I was never charged a fee. On the other hand, I am now less than 45 days out, so if I made any changes now and the price of my trip went down, then I'd be charged a change fee.
