How difficult would this be to do as the reservation gets closer? I just reserved a 2br lock-off in anticipation of grandparents staying with us but plans may change as the time gets closer. Can I just take the 2nd br off the reservation or will I need to cancel and make a new reservation for 1br? I did the lock-off thinking I could just nix the studio portion of the res. but now I'm not sure whether they will be able to do that...

That would be a cancel and rebook, not just dropping the second bedroom. If you don't do it at least 31 days out, your extra points go into holding and must be used by the end of the UY. Plus the one bedroom might not be available when you want to book it.

not what I wanted to hear but thanks for the clarification. We could use the extra bedroom if we had to but typically we use only a 1br. Oh well, I will just have to make sure to nail down the grandparents' intentions before that 31 days...

Just because you have a L/O reserved does not mean DVC will book it as the smaller components. My understanding is they input how many of the units are bookable as 2 BR and how many are used as the individual components (1BR/Studio). So if you cancel to rebook, there might not be a 1 BR available even if the 2 BR L/O still is. I don't know if this changes as you get closer to the reservation but I doubt it does.

Your problem is that you have not reserved a 1BR and a Studio, you have a 2BR villa (that just happens to be a lock-off).

As noted, availability for the 1BR will be the biggest challenge and the Holding Account adds another level of consideration if the change is made within 30 days of arrival.

Good luck, but it might be worthwhile just enjoying the additional space if they do not come. :)

You could cancel now and book a one bedroom and a studio and request that they connect. It would require more points and there isn't a guarantee that you will get them to connect. But if you cancel the studio at 30 days or less, those points would still go into holding. And if you are past your banking period, you'd still have to use the points before the end of the UY or lose them.

My plan is that if I have to change this res., I will call to check for 1br availability first. We are going at the end of Jan, so I'm thinking we will be OK. We have Kadani right now but if need be, we would switch to another resort and Saragota always has availability.

If you have enough points, you could reserve both and cancel what you don't need later.
