Changing name on Southwest ticket

If someone couldn't come on the trip, and we wanted to put someone else's name on the ticket, is there a charge for that? Would we have to completely cancel that ticket outright and book a whole new ticket in the new person's name, or can we just switch names without having to cancel the original ticket?

You can't change names on a ticket. You would have to cancel it and use the funds to buy a new ticket. No guarantee the rate would be the same. Starting on January 28, you can't use travel funds for a different person, so you would be out the money unless it was a refundable ticket.
