Changing from cash ressie to points

I'm in the process of becoming a DVC member (buying on resale market). The contract I'm purchasing has banked 08 points that must be used by March 2010. It just so happens I will be in Orlando in October and would like to use those banked 08 points. Here's my question...can I go ahead and make a cash reservation at a DVC location and then once I become a DVC member change it over to use my points? I've been researching this for years and finally saw a contract that would work for my family.

sorry. it's a totally different system. there may still be cash availability while points reservations are completely booked up.

it's best just to hope something is available at the last minute when you get into the system.

It took us a long time, about 2 months, from putting in a resale contract to making a reservation with those points. We were able to cancel our Sept trip that we booked at the Swan, and get a last minute reservation at the BWV for the same time. We booked about 3 1/2 weeks before the trip. Maybe you will have better luck, but it seems that Disney is taking almost the whole 30 days for ROFR. We have a contract at ROFR that has already been there 26 days. We are hoping to make a January reservation with the banked 08 points. Our other contracts took 22 and 28 days to pass ROFR in July.
