Changing a waitlist question

If I have a waitlist, I am assuming that my position in the assignment of availability rooms is a function of how early I submitted my waitlist request-- those who submitted waitlists on May 20 would have precedent over someone who submitted the exact waitlist on May 21. If this is the case (if not, please correct me), can I make changes to the waitlist (subtract days) without losing my place in line (having to cancel the entire waitlist and start over)? Can I assume this would have to be done via member services?

MS has told me it is essentially beginning a brand new wait list. Try calling/checking online to check inventory every so often. I've gotten matches this way multiple times that the wait list system did not catch.
