Changes in reservation

I just want to make sure I have this right before I make my reservation. If I book a reservation and make changes to the reservation (let's say drop a day or change resort) and the adapted reservation takes less points, does the points if in my small user year go back into my account w/o penalty. I want to book in advance but still not 100% sure. I believe it us just if it is after 30 days that it us a problem. I just want to make sure any unused points will be safe.

Yes, points will be returned to your account without penalty depending on when you cancel/make changes. They may be used for another reservation or banked (subject to usual banking policy).

As long as it's 31 days or more before arrival - no penalty. With cancellations 30 days or less the points will go into the Holding Account to be used for reservations made within 60 days of arrival. Cancellations made on arrival day are forfeited.

If the reservation was for any of the non-DVC options, there are other restrictions where the points could no longer be used at a DVC resort. If any of the returned points had been borrowed, they cannot be returned to their original Use Year.

The problems you could have.

You are in the last four months of your UY when you change the reservation. In that case, you cannot bank any left over points.

You are 30 days out when you change the reservation. Left over points become holding points and you can't bank them at all and must use them before the end of the UY.

You borrowed points to make the reservation. The borrowed points cannot go back into the original UY. They are still current year points and must be used before the end of the UY. (but you could use them in the resevation and bank any current year points as long as you were not in the last four months of your UY).

We had a waitlist a few years ago that would have left us with left over points. We had to cancel the waitlist before we were into our last four months of the UY so we wouldn't have points that we could not use.

One other note is that points are day specific so if you drop a day that was made using banked or borrowed points, you'll get those back and not current UY (bankable) points. They MAY be able to switch them around to give back the more usable points but there are no guarantees.
