Good morning folks,

My wife joined DVC a few days ago but haven't received the paperwork yet (expected today). If we found out that there was a preferential UY available, would MS allow us to change the UY before we sign the paperwork? I would assume that another set of contracts would need to be sent out, but does anyone else forsee other problems?

Thanks!

Ryan

Since you have not signed the contracts yet, I see no reason why you could not change the UY, but if you are buying into one of the "sold out" resorts, there may not be points available for the UY you had in mind...you may have to wait a few days, weeks or longer for the UY you desire.

The bigger issue is do you really feel that a change in UY is warranted...especially at this late date ??

I have always felt that the UY "thing" is overblown as who really knows what our vacationing patterns are going to be in 2015...2030 or 2040 ??

Unless you truly feel that you made a major mistake in your choice of the UY, I would just go along with the paperwork as it is and enjoy your DVC member ship.

Understood. We ended up with a Dec. UY, which would be ok, but since our kids school calendar is modified year round, we'll be going in October and December most of the time for the next 15 years, and I worry about the October trips.

We'll see how hard it is, I guess. If it's a big pain, like you said it's probably not something to worry about, but if it's as simple as a second FedEx shipment, I'll wait another week to sign the paperwork.

I agree that the use year situation/worrying is way overblown. With proper planning UY should not be a problem or consideration. I too have kids in school with a December UY on my DVC. I have not had any problems planning our vacations with this UY. You just need to plan ahead.

What happens in this situation, if for some reason you need to cancel the October or December trip, and you UY is December?
We plan to travel in September, October, or January. Our UY is March. My concern is if i had to cancel a January trip, with a March UY, where we used banked and borrowed points, it looks like our only option would be to try to sell the reservation at the last minute, or lose the points.

You need to have a UY that works with your typical travel times. Changing down the road is very costly as I'm in the process of doing that right now. There's the commission to sell your current contracts and the price difference on the new contracts.:faint:

You don't want to have your big major trips after your banking deadline as you can run into a situation where you are unable to use your points before the end of your UY.

If your flexible with travel dates then it doesn't matter. My workload doesn't allow this flexibility.

Thanks, now i am wondering if we made a mistake purchasing a contract with a March UY. Most of our travel (at least in the near future) will take place in January, October, or December.
I guess as long as we can plan ahead we are in good shape, and on the off chance that something comes up, we can rent the reservation.
In the larger scope of things, this is not a bad problem to have. We will be closing soon :)

In your case your Dec trips will be the only ones you may have trouble with and as long as you can reschedule or rent you'll be OK.

In our case, we travel Oct, Nov Dec and our banking deadline is Sept:( so we're switching to an AUG UY.

Mike,

Your use year is not great for your current plans... but most people will choose to change their travel patterns several times over the life of their contract. For example... if kids or grandkids are in your future, you have a great use year for spring break or summer travel.

Okay, guys...I'm totally going against the grain on this one and tell you my issue with our UY. I will qualify...our situation is a little unique, but here are some things to consider.

We have an Aug UY and DH is a teacher. We will be traveling the same times each year for at least the next 20 years - summer, possibly Christmas, and possibly Spring Break. Unless we move to year-round schooling, that will never change. With that said, I don't worry about cancelling trips, but I do have issues with banked points. When we bank points, they expire at the end of July and this forces us to travel in June or July. If I had a Dec UY, for example, I would have till the end of July to cancel and bank if I chose to, and I would be able to travel any time during the summer without even having to consider when the points will expire. I have run into this issue for two years in a row with vacations.

One more scenario. Let's say we decided to bank/use/borrow points for a huge vacation in July. If we have to cancel, we'd have no time to use the points and would basically lose 3 years worth of points with one transaction. Now, that may be the one time I would consider trip insurance. Honestly, though, I don't concern myself with cancelling, just the banked points issue.

Bottom line, if I had found these boards and known then what I know now, I would NEVER have purchased an Aug UY. I dislike my UY so much that I have seriously considered selling and re-purchasing. I know most will tell you it's not an issue, and I believe them. I really don't think it is an issue for the majority. However, for those of us with "fixed" schedules or inflexible/unpredictable jobs, it can be a huge factor.

Hope this and OPs help you make the best decision for you!!! :thumbsup2

Since I am new to this as I just purchased today, I am really confused on how banking, borrowing, and UY what it all means :confused3 I too am a teacher and will be traveling only in March (Spring break), summer, or Christmas break. The UY I was given is Dec. Does anyone think this could be a problem for me? If someone could give me the version of all this in DVC for Dummies I would greatly appreciate it! Oh and I always plan ahead, I can't help it. Thanks!

Unused points would expire 11/30 of each year - new points "credited" 12/1.
Your Christmas trip is in the first month; spring break is in the first half of your year; and as long as you plan any summer trip for June or July, you would still have time to bank (by July 31) in the event of cancellation.

Nope, I think December is perfect for you. Your bank window ends near the end of the summer, so if you have to cancel a summer stay you'll be fine, and you'll get your points before any Christmas or Spring Break trip.

Since we're modified year round, and our breaks are in October, March, and June, with June being the least likely of our trip times, I want our October window to be after our UY month.

I would say for classical school schedules, December works out perfectly.

Why do you have to bank by July 31 if my UY is Dec? Also, how do I bank points and when do you have to do it by for a Dec. UY? How long before banked points expire? Sorry for so many questions, there is just so much to learn!!!

Disney has a rule that you have to bank your points for next year by the end of the 8th month of your UY. Any non-banked points must be used by the end of the current year, otherwise they're lost.

I'm new at this, so I haven't banked yet, but my understanding is that you can do it by either calling MS or doing it online.

Banked points can be used at any time in the year it is banked to (the next year), but cannot be re-banked.

Thanks for everyone's help! I ahve posted a lot in the last couple of days before buying and everyone has been so helpful. My husband thinks I am addicted to this forum right now. I actually am, but don't tell him! :)

You were given what is perhaps the perfect use year for your situation. Your banking deadline is July 31st... which means that as long as you book your summer vacations in the months of June or July... then you can still cancel and still bank your points. Also... even if you need to cancel a August reservation, you must do it 31 days in advance... which still you means you can bank by July 31st

Have you considered moving your vacation schedule to August? I have no idea when your school year starts... but if you took annual August trips... your use year would be perfect!
