Bobbi - As promised.

Australian Animals

Here are mountain gum trees, misty from a very rainy winter/spring we've had. It rained when I went up to visit. Gives you an idea of some of the habitat that the animals can be found in.

Cockatoo - the Major Mitchell variety, with pinky hues.
The other common one is the Sulphur/Yellow crested cockatoo. The red/blue bird below is a Crimson Rosella, part of the Budgie/Parakeet family.

Emu

Kangaroos - numerous varieties. These are ones that are common in Victoria, the state I live in.

Koala - pretty much that's all this animal does for 20 hours in the day.

Kookaburras - these were found in the Royal Botannical gardens, right in the heart of the city. Their laugh is as amazing as you think!

Platypus - taken from the zoo. Another nocturnal creature and no flash photography allowed because it blinds them. Gonna be interesting if AK ends up having these on display to enforce the no flash rule.

Possum - I got this in one of the city parks. Another noctural creature. About as common at night as your squirrels. Pretty much eats all the fruit off my fruit trees!

Rosella - I can't recall what type.

Wombat - another noctural creature that pretty much sleeps all day!

Princess, those are beautiful pictures. I love the word "Platypusary!" However, I can't "see" the platypus in your picture. I even asked Tom to help me find it.

Oh those birds are so beautiful. We have seen koalas as guests in various zoos. I believe they smell like the eucalyptus leaves that they eat.

I really hope the rumor about Australia being part of the AK is true.

Bobbi - That platypus was moving faster than Perry from Phineas and Ferb that day. I just couldn't get a clear shot of it and the picture I posted was the best of the lot.

If you take another look, I caught it when it was effectively touching the wall and doing a somersault turn. The beak is where the green leaf is and facing the top (head is underneath). The webbed feet that you can see are his front flippers and the two back paws are the skin coloured things on the right side of the picture (and the tail underneath the paws).
The paws are closed so that when can completes the somersault, it can use them to push off the wall. Hope this helps you "see" it.

Koalas smell like they are "drunk". It is a 'green' smell but it is still an animal smell

If you like the birds, you should come and visit now. Because of the rain, we are seeing a lot of the yellow crested (white bodied) cockatoos and both varieties rosellas in all the local parks. There is an abundance of bird life at the moment in my suburb, all the way into the very outskirts of the city.

Thanks for the hint...I'm working on it! I believe that one of those birds is the inspiration for a song I sang at Girl Scount camp (in the '50s)
