We're trying to figure out how large of a contract to buy at Old Key West. We want to stay in a 2 bedroom during choice season. I'm comparing 2010 and 2011 points requirements and I see that in 2010 one week required 230 points, now in 2011 one week requires 232 points. Is there a limit to how high Disney can change this? I was under the impression that the weekly rates were set in stone but the daily rates can change yearly, I see now that I was wrong. Any information on this will be much appreciated since it relates directly to how large of a contract I need to look for.
Thanks for your help.

The total amount of points within a point chart can never increase. Disney can "reallocate" points within a point chart and that is what they have done between the 2010 and 2011 point charts. They have added 2 points to the week you were looking at, but subtracted 2 points from another week.

Many will suggest adding an addition 10% cushion for changes. The other piece that DVC can do is move time frames from season to season.

For example, they could, if they wanted, make mid December Dream season instead of Choice. Of course, if they do this, then they have to move something else around to compensate for it.

We typically travel right now during Magic Season so we bought enough for that. We know that when we retire, we will begin to vacation in Adventure or Choice Seasons. Having had to purchase for a higher point time will help us down the road.

This may be something you want to consider so that any fluctuations will be covered.

Good luck!

It is actually all accumulated points throughout the year for the resort that can not change.

We require an additional 33 points per year to keep our usual vacation periods.

Bottom line is that Disney can and will make changes that will affect your membership.

In theory, any changes shouldn't affect the number of days you could stay in at a given resort, but could affect the time of year or type of room.

That is, if you added up how many points it would cost to book an entire resort for the whole year, that should stay the same.

So if you can do 7 nights at OKW, in theory you should always have enough points to do at least 7 nights, but that could be in a different room type or a diffrent time of year, or may not include 7 contiguous nights.

They can adjust the relavtive costs of one season to another, one room type to another, one day to another, but the total is always the same, so anything they make more "expensive" something else needs to be made "cheaper."

It's also worth asking yourself whether you can remain a Choice traveler indefinintely, and if not, for how long. For example, when my kids were younger, going when school was in session was possible. Now, I'd be pretty much limited to Magic or Premiere.
