Hello,

I just got back from a 10 night stay in Disney, 5 nights at WLV's & 5 nights at Boardwalk. To my surprise I was upgraded from a studio to a one bedroom for the 5 nights at WLV's. Needless to say I was very happy with this upgrade and extremely grateful. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced any upgrades in the past. It's my thinking that upgrades may occur more at the WLV's simply because it has less units to offer. I'm thinking studios probably book faster than 1 & 2 bedrooms so when the studios fill up management starts to give free upgrades rather than leave empty rooms. So I'm guessing there should be more upgrade potential at WLV's than at Boardwalk or OKW. Are there any experts out there that might have any input on the topic?

I think your reasoning is probably sound. During the higher point times, I am quite sure the studios might be the fastest to fill. They are probably also easier to use for cash paying guests.

It's surprising if you were upgraded while staying on points. In the past, the policy has been not to do that since all members are to be treated equally. Upgrades would only happen because of a problem -- rooms unexpectedly out of commission, booking mistake, etc. They wouldn't upgrade a member just because a room was empty. I can't say what the chances are of it happening for you again. Consider yourself lucky to have gotten it this time. :)

What a lovely surprise! That is the kind of upgrade most of us only dream about!:)

I asked an MS CM about upgrades a few months ago when making our BWV reservation. I wondered if, as the date got closer, they would upgrade people from standard view to preferred view to get more people in the rooms, rather than have empty preferred view and people who stayed in lower point rooms at OKW or not come at all (was hoping that I could waitlist for a standard view and possibly get it -- ended up being moot because we got a BW view).

The answer was absolutely not. Upgrades only happen do to mistakes or facility problems. That said, I imagine the manager does whatever he needs to at the last minute to keep people happy.

You're extremely fortunate! But, the real question is, can you go back to a studio, now that you've experienced the 1 BR :) :)

It's very rare for anyone to post that they received an upgrade at ANY of the DVC properties, unless there was a room problem or renovations (ie, during BWV's renovations, some of the studios were out of commission, so some people posted that they got to stay in a 1 BR).

Unlike hotels and airlines, DVC resorts cannot be overbooked with the assumption that x% of the reservations will not show up. In hotels, when the people showing up exceed their expectations, that is when people are generally given the upgrades.

I'd say you were quite fortunate. And kda has asked the real question of the hour!! :p
