I booked a trip for my niece and her children in April, unfortunately her son is going through a very difficult time and he won't be able to go. Without getting into all the details he has some severe emotional issues and is currently being being hospitalized. Will Southwest take this into consideration? What should we do?

well, I don't know if you can get a refund or not, it doesn't hurt to call them and ask though.

Even if they don't give a refund, you'll be able to cancel the flight and get a ticketless travel fund, which will be a credit for another SW flight as long as the flight takes place within 1 year of your original purchase date. So you won't totally lose out.

But I'd call them, explain the situation, and see what they can do for you.

Instead of calling the 800 number, look up the Southwest Customer Relations number on their web site in the refunds section. Deal with them directly as they ultimately make the decisions.

My mother was under a doctors care with pneumonia when they were supposed to fly. This was on a ticket that used some ready to expire travel funds. She called to see if they could extend the credit on the travel funds because of the illness. She had to have her doctor fax Southwest some paperwork, but instead of extending her credit, they actually refunded the full value of the ticket to the credit card.

Each situation will be evaluated on it's own merit, but there are successes out there.

I got a refund for my mil on her ticket when she could not make the trip to Vegas as my fil had a heart attack. They would not refund the money we used with a credit but I felt they were more than fair.

If you used a credit card and can provide a doctor's note, SW has been known to refund your money in full. They are generally a decent company to deal with!

Thanks everyone, I called and explained. They said if I can get a letter from his doctor and send it to them I can get a refund, so that's what I am going to do. Hopefully it all works out.

Now that's what I call great customer service. :thumbsup2
