A parent from my childs school invited me over to scrap with her yesterday and she showed me some chalking.
She is just starting to use it.

My question is: what is that clear, sticky stamp pad called that you use with chalk?

Is the chalk used different from childrens sidewalk challk?

What other applications do you use it with besides rubber stamps?

I would love to know how to use the chalk. I just had to have some and when I use it, it looks like a kindergardener did it. :confused3

It's a clear embossing pad. You are so in trouble! Chalks can really be addicting. Ask spinning! The chalks are smoother and softer than sidewalk chalks. Good thing is they are inexpensive, last forever and go a long way. You can use them to do shading on your tags, photo mats or anything. Color diecuts or paper piecings. The skies the limit with chalks. Have fun!!!

Were you meaning with stamped images or just in general? Make sure to go light and soft to begin with. You can always add more but it's hard to get off sometimes if you put too much. Going from the edges out sometimes works best.

My FAVORITE method with chalk would be tearing paper and then chalking the edges...

Chalk is very inexpensive - and it is different from the kids chalks...

theclear pad is called "VERSA"
they have markers too soyou can handwrite or color and then add the chalk!

How do you keep chalk from smearing?

I had A REAL hard time with it -
I know you CAN buy a spray for it - I never did -
I just found that if I set it aside and sorta let it air overnight before I put it in the album I never had a problem...

AHHH chalk oh how I love it! LOL!
I don't know everythign about chalking but what I do know is you can't go wrong. And if you do buy this little white chalk eraser! Removes all unwanted chalk!
Smearing...Never had a problem. I think the trick is to put the chalk on in layers, when you add chalk to your applicator blow on it to remove any loose chalk.
Chalking on riped paper is the best! Makes it softer and high lights it!
I have never used the versa mark pad and chalk. I think it would smear big time!
I bought this wonderful embossing paste! LOve it! Finally found translucent! So you chalk your image (using a template!) then spread this paste on it. Let it dry...and it is a pretty raised embellishment!

I also use a damp paintbrush to apply chalk - looks like I used watercolor paints.

I never heard of using an embossing pad with chalk, how exactly do you use it? I haven't had a problem with it smearing, I think using page protectors help with that. I did read one time to put a clean piece of paper over what you just chalked and rub gently, it is supposed to "set" the chalk. But like Spinning said, if you blow on the applicator and do it in layers, that helps too.

RE: - embossing pad with chalk. I rubber stamp an image with the versa mark ink pad. Then you chalk over it and the image appears within the color (kind of hard to describe).

Thanks, I am going to try that, it sou :flower: nds like something I would really like!

Jenn,
I am still not totally following this. Are you putting chalk over the entire stamped image? So is is kind of shadowy? or do you erase what is in the non stamped area?

Oh I forgot about using water! Very kewl! Too! I bougth one of these water pens! Love it!

But you got to try the embossing paste!

mommie2angels, I meant in general but I guess that would cover a large topic :)

You can chalk without using the Versa pad? That was the only way I was shown yesterday so assumed that was the only way to apply chalk.

Is this correct? Methods to apply chalk:

1. by itself
2. using Versa Pad
3. with embossing paste
4. with spray
5. using damp paintbrush

Jenn, that was the method I was shown.

You can use Versamark ink or white ink. My friend uses Daisy White from Close To My Heart. I have also colored in images by touching my blender pen tip to the chalk and drawing up some of the color. Makes like a watercolor brush.

I think the great thing about chalk is that you can't really mess it up. It's chalk so it's got a "soft" look and you don't have to fall within the lines -- smudgy is good!

One thing to remember is if you are chalking the image that you stamped it has to be an ink that won't dry too fast so that the ink will stay wet. Most people chalk over clear ink but I do like the white from CTMH too. I think you get a brighter look especially if you are using a darker paper.

I forgot about spinning and her love for templates. One thing you can do with the templates and the ink pads is to put your template on your paper then but the pad directly on the template. Make sure the ink pad isn't larger than your template so it doesn't make a mark outside the template. Unless it's a pattern you are going to cut out any way then it won't matter. The ink will make the design of the template on your page. Remove the template and then chalk. Not much different from stamping a clear image and then chalking but gives you more options if you have stamps and templates.

One more I thought of as I was typing that is to use it with dry embossing. Take your template and emboss the image. Place the template on top of the raised image then chalk over that. A quick and easy added touch to your dry embossing.

I do not give instructions well. I hope that was clear. Probably clear as mud!

They had a great demo of chalking over Versamark a few weeks ago on DIY network. You could probably find the instructions online.....wait a minute.... I'll go look....
Okay.... no luck finding the exact episode where I saw it, but here is a link to the home page anyhow....

When I saw them doing it they used a rubber stamp with a Versamark pad. They stamped the image and then lightly dried it with an embossing gun. When it was just sticky but not totally wet they went over it with chalks. The chalks stuck harder to the area where the stamp had been. It was VERY pretty, but hard to describe. The show I saw they were using a stamp of a pansy.

Good luck...................P
