Cereal on board

Oh man, I love fruit loops, but I don’t remember ever seeing them on a Disney Cruise. They don’t have any good sugar cereals.

They have had Froot Loops on nearly every Dream and Fantasy cruise we've sailed on because that's my daughter's favorite and she eats it for breakfast on each trip:thumbsup2

I have an honest question. With cereal being readily available anywhere you are, why would it be sought out on vacation or a cruise ship? Most people look forward to food they can only get on the ship or at their destinations, so I am truly curious. :duck:

Speaking for us, with food allergies, we know we cannot always eat the food in ports safely. Knowing we could grab Froot Loops off the ship provides one snack that would be acceptable since we have safely eaten them before. We will likely pack other snacks to bring along as well, but I would rather not bring the whole pantry.

My kids love it bc I don’t buy cereal at home (it has very little nutritional value) so it’s a treat for them onboard. Also it’s convenient to grab and take off ship for a quick snack.

The kids love it and it was really novel for them to be able to eat Corn Pops and Froot Loops. I also like cereal and don’t eat it that often at home so i like to get it too sometimes. And a lot of hot buffet items can be kinda meh for me.

Plus they were great to be able to bring off the boat and use as snacks for the kids.

For me, when my tummy is acting up, Frosted Flakes are my go-to remedy.

For others, it's as simple as "kids are picky about their foods". And Disney has a lot of kids onboard. It's not unusual for kids to refuse to eat something they've never tried, seen, or heard of. This can be expanded to some adults. My brother-in-law only ate breakfast for every meal, if he could.

This past cruise was the first time I actually looked at the cereals, and it's because I developed a gluten allergy last fall. While I was on the ship, I was taken care of very well, but getting off in port was a little more worrisome. I looked to see if they had Cheerios on the ship so I could grab a pack to take with me as a snack while off the ship. It would have been a comfort to have a food I knew to be safe for me to eat.

Otherwise, I would agree with you. Usually on vacation I enjoy eating things I normally wouldn't eat at home. We sailed out of Miami, and I had a couple experiences in restaurants in Miami before the cruise that made me more nervous about eating out and drove me to be extra cautious about what I was eating. For whatever reason, I expected servers in a large city like Miami to be at least knowledgeable about food allergies and prepared to defer to a chef or another server if they were uncertain about how to handle a food allergy. Instead, I ran into two servers in a row (one at lunch and one at dinner the day before we sailed) that were completely ignorant of what gluten is and rather than ask questions or get someone who knew, they made food recommendations that demonstrated their ignorance. Luckily, it was so obvious they didn't know what they were talking about that I was able to address their errors and get something safe for me to eat. But after that, I found myself being less adventurous than I normally am in regards to food.

I've always been into fitness and nutrition, so I follow a fairly rigid diet and exercise program as part of my every day life. When I'm on vacation, however, I eat whatever junk I want and don't exercise. And sometimes, you just want a bowl of Froot Loops.

Also, I live in a big city so the concept that I'm truly going to experience unique foods on a cruise doesn't really register. There might be something truly interesting/authentic at a port, but I can hunt down pretty much anything else locally.

I have started stocking up on Luna bars (99 cents each at Trader Joe's!) before a cruise - a) it's a guaranteed gf snack or meal in the airport (not always the easiest place to find something gf) and b) simple to throw in my bag for any excursion over a mealtime.
