Census work & unemployment?

Sorry OP....I know we are far from your original question and I hope you have checked to see if you can collect.

I have been away from the computer for a few days and just cannot believe the statements you are making, CowboyCO.

If you are honestly trying to hire someone without a college degree for $2500 a month plus benefits, and cannot find anyone, there is something else going on with the job or your company. That would mean a person would have to be collecting about $577 a week in employment to be at that salary....do any states even pay that much in unemployment?????

Several times you have referenced a time when you were unemployed, but found some crappy job, such as selling cars. If I might ask, when were you unemployed? Was it during the current recession...because if not, I don't think you can make a fair comparison. Do you understand that there are not even "crappy" jobs for people to take? Do you understand that for every job opening there are multitudes of candidates that apply...and you never even hear a word if you don't get an interview?

Do you understand that people on unemployment do not receive other government services, such as food stamps? There may be some exceptions, but the majority of people get unemployment only. Once you take away the unemployment from people and they still cannot get a job, that is when they will need to get state and federal aid from other programs.

I can't really figure out whether you truly have no clue what is going on in this country, are ignorant of facts and just state what you believe as though it is a fact, or are just trying to stir things up.

I can't read this thread anymore...you are making my blood pressure go up.

As an example...We are getting a new Publix grocery store. They will need less than 200 people yet they had 1,500 applications!

You hit the nail on the head. It is so different in today's economy with more than 15 million people unemployed it is an epidemic not just a few people with this problem.

Who is still working for the the Census?? I was a CL during NRFU, worked from April 12 until June 27... then worked 3 weeks as an enumerator in VDC and was hoping to be called back to work the next phase..

I work for the Unemployment office in Colorado and I can tell you that we take claims daily from people who have worked for the Census. If they paid you a wage and reported it on a W-2, then they also paid unemployment taxes for you.

The question comes in as to whether or not you have had other wages in the last 18 months that you could use to collect off of. Most states use the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters to calculate your benefits amount. For example, if you filed a claim in Colorado today we would be looking to see if you had any wages from 04/01/09-03/31/10, and you would need to have had a minimum of $2500 in wages to qualify for a claim. In some cases we can use what is called an "alternate base period" in which we could use the wages from 07/01/09-06/30/10 to try and qualify you for a claim. Bottom line is that you should definitely contact your local UI office to see if you qualify. Be patient, with the new extension just being signed into law the phones are EXTREMELY busy right now!! Just keep hitting that redial button.

On another note - and I don't believe that most of the other states rules are that much different from those in Colorado - a job is a job, temporary or permanent does not matter. It's funny how many people tell us that they didn't think that their temp job counted toward anything because it wasn't a "real" job. As long as you have been paid "real" money, we look at it as a "real" job.

Wow - there is a LOT of bad attitudes toward unemployment insurance here!

FIRST - it's not a charity, so if you qualify, you should get it and not feel badly about it.

SECOND - it has been PREVIOUSLY paid for by your employer. I had a store - when I paid each week's paychecks, I had to send money into the state THAT WEEK. No matter if someone was collecting unemployment or not. If someone collected AFTER they were done at my store, I did not pay extra - it was already paid. So, you're not screwing the employer if you collect - it has nothing to do with them (well, except if they have a lot of people collect it may make their "premium" go up in the form of credits, but that really didn't happen much).

I am shocked at some of the attitudes here & judgmental people!

If someone lost a job - Even a temp one! - through no fault of their own (i.e. no fraud, stealing, etc) and they qualify for unemployment, then they should collect it if they desire, with NO ONE judging them.
