Census~required by law??

I didn't know that insurance companies used ss# any more. I know they did when I worked but that was eons ago. Back before they invented the wheel, according to my kids.

Some still do. You would be surprised who has access to all of this info that you do not want to share on the census. I worked for a company who took work outsourced from a major insurance company. Our agents had access to so much personal information. They were not fingerprinted, had a minimal background check and had access to any and all info that was on the screen. That means if you had health or dental through your company and also had life or disability we had it all. Your address, your SS#, your DOB, your income, your place of employment, your children's names and their DOB.

We did our best to safeguard the information but this company never even wanted to limt cell phone use on the floor, these were camera phones. My company needed to put plans in palce that the insurance company had not even thought of. They worried about Hippa but not information theft.

Thank you to poster who said I could go to Libary and get form I shall do that.

Heck, you have to even give Disney their date of birth. Now there's a need to know. You give our this information to go on a cruise.

I never had to give Disney anyone's birthdate:confused3
we have been several times and they have never asked

I'm surprised to see so much paranoia but I shouldn't be. I can understand why some people feel that way even if I think it's misplaced.

By the way, I gave my SSN to a doctor just yesterday. This is how my insurance company compensates.
you can ask your insurance company to use a different number other than SSN for identification/member number
years ago ours was hubbys ss number and he had them remove it and change it to a random number

The Census has to be done. Period. It would cost millions of dollars to process the Census if everyone got one and turned it in complete. The more people ignore or resist, the more it is going to cost the taxpayers.

I don't understand why some have to turn something simple into a battle.

YOu don't have to understand it. They say they want a count of people. It doesn't say they want names. I gave them what they wanted, or hubby gave them what they wanted. I won't get into anything about my reasons, that is personal and I won't have that info out there. So just except it.

What did you do in the last Census, may I ask? I am a 2010 Census Crew Leader and I am in charge of a crew of enumerators that will be going to people's homes who didn't return their forms and I appreciate the job security, but I am curious, have you responded to each Census this way, or are you too young to have participated yourself?

BTW my DH is military (he's OWNED by the government) and I had no qualms filling out our Census. We want to be counted and make sure we are fairly represented. There is no eeeeevil conspiracy out to get people, round them up and lock them up, much as some crazy fools with access to a radio show or tv program would have you believe.

Did you have your kids at home and not get a birth certificate for them? Otherwise, their names and birthdates are already known by the government, what's the point of withholding it from the census form?

I know you were not talking to me, but I did not send in a census in 2000, didn't get one, and no one came to my house:confused3

You're right. I don't have to understand it, but I am curious about the mindset of these types of people. It fascinates me. Also, I don't understand your reasoning that the census only wants a count of people and doesn't want names. The form clearly asks for names, ages, birthdays; etc. So, they require more than a number, and if you are not providing it, then you are not giving them what they wanted. They are in their rights under the laws of the U.S. Census as detailed in Title 13 of the U.S. Code. I do believe that the reason why you are refusing to provide certain information is not because it is personal (as has been pointed out already, this information is currently public record - birth certificates, etc), but because you have no reason, except for a general feeling of fear and distrust. You could very easily explain why it would be harmful to children to provide their birthdays (if there was a valid reason) without giving one bit of your personal information away. So, I really have a hard time excepting your vague reason, and I have an even harder time accepting it.

Here's my theory on the "tin foil hat" census people. These people have been listening to certain media outlets that have been preaching to them that they should be suspicious of the U.S. Census. The "entertainers" of these media outlets have thrown out various bizarre and scary stories to make their listeners and viewers fearful. So, these people do truly fear the census, but can't give an intelligent reason why. This is because they are being controlled by fear.

I agree, we don't know who will be handling these forms, I don't just any no name Joe knowing the names and birthdays of my kids. All you ever hear is don't give out detailed into on your kids, and what does our beloved govt do? They ask for it. But they won't get it from me.

What exactly are you afraid of? Honesty trying to understand - cause on the service it seems like only people with tinfoil hats would not answer the questions.

you know I have to say you all are being quite rude with the "tin foil hat" people comments.
I suppose we could say you all drank the kool aid and will follow your leader blindly :) :)

I didn't say a word about tin foil hats but this confirms my suspicions that for some people this ridiculous resistance has nothing to do with the census, which has been around since the birth of our nation, and everything to do with the current leadership. That makes it political which is, of course, not permitted.

We filled ours out and mailed it as soon as it came in. About a week ago, we received another one. :confused3

We've received 6 so far. The first one was sent the day after we received it.

Since I just completed my tax returns today, I'll also note that both the federal government and the state government know the birthdate and social security number of every member of my family.

There's no information on the census form that the government doesn't already know about me. None. I took 2 minutes and filled it out.

The cynical side of me will also note that my congresswoman (one of the people spewing forth concern about the census, Michelle Bachman) decided to fill it out after she learned that if Minnesota loses a congressional seat because of a lower number of people in our state, it's most likely her seat that would go. LOL! Before, she saw no need. Now she does. I secretly hope we lose a seat so we can lose her.

I have never even heard of what you are talking about, I didn't fill out the census, my hubby did. Lay off. If the gov't had my info then they don't need me to tell it to them. WE provided how many people love here. I don't fear the census, I just don't think they need all that info. They can get it on their records. I have my reasons and it has nothing to do with the kids and i not say any more.

thank you for making this paranoid person even more paranoid on this sunny saturday :rotfl:
:surfweb:
I have done my job :rotfl2: Seriously, I was not trying to make anyone more paranoid, I just think that this stand is not the hill I would die on if I really was serious about protecting personal information. ;)

It's really quite simple. It is required by law that we fill out the U.S. Census - not to pick and choose which questions we feel like answering and which ones we don't. Some people feel the law doesn't apply to them. "I just don't think they need all that info" is a poor excuse for not following the law. Again, I will respectfully disagree and hold to my original opinion that there is no valid reason not to answer all the questions. I don't find vague, personal reasons (no real reason) a valid excuse.

On a side note, I have a question for any census workers following this discussion. What happens when you receive incomplete census forms? Do you go to the people's house to get the completed info?

We're not paranoid and sent in the form. That said, the government is moronically run. The IRS as well as other agencies have info on everyone. They don't share this information so every decade they have to employ thousands of people paid with my tax dollars to obtain information they already have.
Dumb

But you keep responding:confused3. You're right. You don't owe me an excuse. Still, I am free to wonder about the mindset of these types of people that are suspicious about the questions on the census and feel that "bad things" will happen if they respond.

This I can believe.
