Census~required by law??

I don't remember any intrusive questions about other household members at all. I filled it out and can't recall this. Can someone who has the form at home post what the intrusive questions are because I'm drawing a blank.

Name?, relationship to "person #1"?, sex?, age and date of birth?, Latino?, race?, does the person sometimes stay somewhere else?.

I will have to check with him when he gets home. I questioned hij about this also, I can't remember what he said, but it was more info than that, I think I also remember reading that certain people(all random) would get much more detailed questions, maybe that is what happened to us.

Just went to the census web site. I didn't see anything that I would fine intrusive, but then again I didn't work for the govt like he did. lol. I think that taints your prospective.

There were no intrusive questions about other family members. I think some people may just be overly paranoid for whatever reason. You can go to the census form website which shows all the questions on the form...
http://2010.census.gov/2010census/how/interactive-form.php.
It asks the person's name, sex, age and race -not sure which of these is overly intrusive.

I hope that you not saying that I am overly paranoid, we re the least paranoid people I know, Heck we even give our SS# to the Dr's office with no questions asked. He had a reason don't know what it was, but read above post. maybe that is his problem.

No, not saying you are overly paranoid. Just amazed at the level of fear and distrust over a simple form that many Americans are voicing.

True, and for the record, we did fill it our as soon as we received it and didn't think twice about it.

Please fill it out. It takes no more than 5 minutes, asks no personal info other than your race. I would not worry about the penalty for not filling it out.

THe thing I didn't like so much (though I did fill it out) is that it asks my childrens names AND birthdays. Isn't something like Female age 10 enough? Do they really need to know her name and her exact birthdate?

Maybe the government is planning on sending free one day passes to Disney for birthdays.

Just to respond to folks who haven't received a form: if you get your mail via PO box only, it's my understanding you should not expect to receive a form. Forms are sent to residences, ie physical locations that can be found on a map. It's one of the flaws in the system but one that sometimes cannot be avoided.

Yep. We own a home in a resort area, and all my friends that live in that area have no mail delivery (we all get a free po box instead), and NOBODY got a census form...but I've seen and talked to the census workers in town, and they started on April 1st visiting every home in town to do the count door to door, just because they didn't mail to PO Boxes.

She has a birth certificate, does she not? That gives her name, birth date, your name, her father's name, place of birth, etc. That's a state government issued document which the federal government uses for citizenship purposes. Just pointing out that it's not as if the government doesn't already have access to this info.

Yep. The government already has that information. They also know her social security number, but that doesn't mean that I had to provide it to the school when they asked for it.

The purpose of the census is to count how many people for purposes of congressional representation. Does them knowing that her birthday is June 5th rather than November 2nd change anything at all about how many congressmen we need?

The census also asks if the children are 'natural born' or 'adopted' or something like that. Again? Whats the point of that?

That was what hubby didn't like. The gov't doesn't need to know the kids names to take a census. He did leave that part blank, but filled out the other questions, but refused to give out detailed info about the kids.

well exactly my point, why then do they need it again?? another data base to be hacked into and not protected imo. ( this coming from someone who has had info compromised by the government that swears to protect it)
I sent mine in,but I didn't include names or birthdates either
and I will be polite to the person who is going to show up at my door and politely with a smile send them on their way.
I don't intimidate easily. so I won't be providing the information when they come here either.

and honestly I would have had no problem if it was just an age and male or female,
but attaching names, birthdates, etc imo is intrusive, but that is MY opinion

fwiw our town does a census every year or so, and on that I never filled anything out, but it has all our info, names, birthdates, what we do for work. LOL even has my cats and dogs on there.
so yes they can compile that info on their own.
when the town one comes we just sign saying the info is correct or correct what isn't and send it back.

If they haves it, then they don't need it on the census, do they?

Providing the names helps validate the submission for accuracy and may also help reduce the amount of dishonesty. As I mentioned before, I would be much more inclined to be suspicious of people being evasive in answering the census than with regard to the census itself.

I agree, we don't know who will be handling these forms, I don't just any no name Joe knowing the names and birthdays of my kids. All you ever hear is don't give out detailed into on your kids, and what does our beloved govt do? They ask for it. But they won't get it from me.

that is something you should not do.

Doesn't bother me but I am used to it, Back in the dark ages when I billed insurance we almost always had to have it. It just doesn't bother me, but then again, I have been going to the same Dr's for years, and I guess they haven't asked for it in years. I haven't been ripped off yet, know that I said that, I probably will be.

Again, I don't understand the paranoia. Perhaps they are asking birth dates so they can get a more accurate count. Many people have the same name. Perhaps they want to try and not double count people and this is why they are asking the birth dates- don't know, just a theory. In any case, I really don't think any harm will come to our children by responding to the census form questions.
